That is the question. After having no issues with my 3.0l Patrol engine etc (the gear box, well that's another story) and I might add that 3 friends also having them with no issues, the time has come to consider an extended warranty. I recieved the paper work in the mail and read that it's underwritten by Swann (I think - I left the paperwork at work) and thought this odd. Anyway Nissan HO confirmed this is the case (and always has been). I found this odd but they assured me that the warranty is the same as what I have now with Roadside Assist etc.
So the big question @ $895 would be very cheap if I had a big problem like a turbo but I have only done 55,000km's so I would think I wouldn't have any probs for the next 45,000kms. What would you do?

You know you will be bound to them (Nissan Dealers) for servicing for the entire warranty period.

You cannot use any other service agent under that warranty and you must be VERY precice about service intervals.

Just like any other insurance company they will do everything in their power to minimise payouts. Read the fine print carefully.

I took out extended warranty which expires in May this year and had 3 claims

one was for a new air con compressor had no problems with Nissan replacing it and I have NEVER had my GU serviced by a Nissan dealer and once went 530k over service date
For my money go for extended warranty

I also have extended warranty which will actually come into effect next week, (going for 100000k service this arvo) and nowhere does it stipulate the servicing has to be done by Nissan.
The only time they have seen my car since I bought it was for a warranty reapir to the EGR at 65000kms.

Fine Boys, however mine did.
I repeat, read the small print first. Better to be sure than sorry.

Sorry have to disagree. Have the extended service with Swann. Have just made a claim for a clutch master cylinder. 2003 Patrol with 115,000km. NEVER serviced by Nissan. Rang the warranty mob, told them the master cylinder was leaking and was having trouble with the clutch pedal not returning. Was told by them to take it to my normal repairer (in this case Ultratune) and have them ring when the work was to be conducted. Clutch cylinder repaired at no cost to me. They didn't want quotes or to see the service history (or the car for that matter) etc. Their policy states that it must be serviced by a service centre with at least one qualified mechanic.
Sounds like you got ripped off!

I didnt get ripped off, I read the small print mate and didnt take the ins.. I opted not to buy the insurance and luckily have had no need for it.

With any insurance, read the small print.

Hi Leroy.

I have a GU 4.8 auto purchased November 2001. No major problems but plenty of niggles with Nissan due to poor design and other minor problems. I only have 90,000 on the clock.
I questioned the value of extended warranty but decided to take it out, just in case. That's basically what insurance is all about. The extended warranty finished in November 2006.

In October 2006 while in the NT on a trip I started to experience the A/T warning light flashing when the GU was started. According to he owners manual this meant that the car had to go to a dealer as there was an auto transmission problem. I took it to Kittle Nissan in Alice Springs. They tested the car and downloaded the computer record of the faults but could not find a cause. I also contacted FTG Nissan and advised them of the problem.

Subsequently the A/T warning light continued to come on, particularly when I was towing. FTG Nissan looked at it in Jan 2007 (out of warranty time) and could not replicate the fault or find a reason for the A/T alarm. I took the GU to a crowd that loaded up the engine on a dyno and after a period of time they were able to get the A/T alarm to come on. The suggested that the Transmission Control Module should be replaced.

To cut a long story short, yesterday, after some discussion with FTG Nissan, they replaced the Transmission Control Module under warranty even though they could not replicate the fault nor find a reason. The fault had originally occured one month before the end of the extended warranty and I was able to prove this.

So! From my point of view, the extended warranty was worthwhile.
Happy 4 wheeling

leroy mate
i have had 2 nissan patrol 3.0 l td and still have my 2004 series 1V and never really had a problem to now with either - regardless of all the horror stories on the forum from time to time and the trucksters great obsession - but have taken extended warraty with both vehicles - cheap insurance in my opinion - a bloody fuel pump cost about $4K to replace let alone a blown engine and yes some do fail according to my mechanic - i share my services turn about between my local nissan dealer and an accredited local mechanical workshop - as long as the vehicle is serviced by a an accredited mechaical service workshop nissan cant deny warranty -as in breach of trade practices
great 4wd vehicles IMHO but yes they do have an occassional problem
so in my opinon take the extended warranty if you can afford it
see you greg

Definitely get the warranty - I had two turbos replaced (about 100,000km) and a gearbox 5th gear fixed (about 120,000km) on my 4.2L on the extended warranty.
The $895 sounds about right.
