Can anyone tell me how/where to obtain permits for travel on & thru Aboriginal lands. Is it a state or federal thing.
Thanks in advance Mark.

Permits are usually obtained from the relevant government authority for the state in which the permit is required.
for the Northern Territory it is: www.clc.org.au/permits/
for Western Australia it is : www.dia.wa.gov.au/Land/Permit/
Otherwise you can get more info on this site under 'Trip Planning'

On a recent trip we got permits for both the N.T. and W.A. from the tourist info office at Ayers Rock.We just had to wait for an hour or two for the permits to be faxed from Perth and Alice Springs.

To get permit for for Arnhem Land NT, you must have bloody good reason. Something like to be botanical scientist or zoologist or something like that. Only few people (about 7) a year get the permit, and there are big big restrictions how, what vehicle you can travel (no petrol at all) where and so, so.......
