Hi everyone out there hope you had a good weekend.I bought a new landcruiser ute in november and i am thinking about putting a new 6.5 litre chev diesel in there.I know the new utes are coming out soon in the v8s but ive always wanted to put a big (F--k off) v8 in my ute so i am looking for info from people whether they be toyota or nissan drivers on the specs of the motors with info on horsepower and torque figures .Is it worthwhile are you getting the increased fuel economy at normal driving conditions (sitting on speed limit down highway) and the prices that it has cost to do the conversions. Thanks please help.

Hi turbo 79,

I have looked into doing similar to my GU and if I remember right the HP from the n/a 6.5 was 150 and near on 200 for the turboed 6.5 Chev. In the end I worked on my 4.2 and have ended up with 168HP for about the quarter of the cost of the Chev conversion. I feel very confident you could get similar figures from the cruisers donk. I recently had the pleasure of driving a turboed 6.5 and after about 1600 or 1700 rpm I reckon my GU crapped all over the chevvy powered cruiser ute I was driving and thinking of buying. Below 1600rpm it is a different story obviously but then my crawler transfer gear would make a mockery of the extra torque of the chev motor in a standard vehicle being powered by such a motor. Really look into what you can achieve with what you allready have.

Good luck with your choice.
Regards, Trevor.

I had a 6.5 in 75 series trayback. Loved it. An awesome beast.

But............in all honesty if you have a new factory turbo 79 you'd be stark raving mad to go down that path IMHO.

If I were adamant you needed a bent eight, I'd sell yours and wait to buy a factory V8 diesel.

Pulling out a new 1HD-FTE and putting in an american V8, sounds like a backward step to me.

I have both vehicles you would be wasting you're time replacing the turbo with a 6.5 chev spend 2500 grand get a chip and a three inch exhaust if you still need more power get a intercooler should give you about 175kw I'm sure that would be enough

I'm with you, look at a custom exhaust from the turbo down, an intercooler, perhaps more boost and a chip.! Or wait for the new V8 turbo diesel and live happily ever after. Now if money is no object and I mean no object , do what you like..? LOL

Turbo 79,

I owned a 100 Series TD 'Cruiser with the 1HDT- FE engine in it. It is a fantastic engine.

I now own a Patrol witha brand new 6.5 N/A Chev in it. It too, is a fantastic engine. There are valid reasosn for why I changed, but too long a story for here and it's all been said before,,,,,,,,,,,

My advice - DON'T CHANGE THE TOJO 1HDT-FE MOTOR FOR A CHEV.

About a year ago, actually its 18 months now, we started thinking about our long term travel, living arrangements when we travel for good .. Part of the three year plan to get everything in place and tried out was the decision for a vehicle capable of doing what we needed it to do ... We have looked at every available 4by and also some truck options and also some crossbreeds like an ISUZU with a decent Cummins engine or a Toyota or Nissan with a Chevy engine ... Power and torque figures as well as load and towing capacity have forced us for our application to go for a V8 diesel in a chassis strong enough to do what we want.
We compared all the figures and cost etc ... The conversion of any vehicle with an old 6.5 chevy did not look ver appealing for several reasons the most important one being that the resulting figures are by no means satisfactory ..
I really do like a strong V8 diesel and prefer it over everything else, and also have that boy in me who likes the nice rumble of a dual 4" exhaust , but in a Toyota ???

We decided to go all the way and get the "Chevy" engine in a package where it belongs and imported a GMC dually ... but thats not for everyones taste ...

good luck
