Hi forumites
Looking for an free overnite camping spot along Western Hwy between
Ballarat and
Ararat. We are travelling to Dimboola for the long weekend for a club trip. I am thinking of leaving Friday night but do not want to drive the whole way at the end of the day.
Can anyone suggest / recommend a spot for a family and tent?
Cheers

Theres a bit of Bush near Mt Langi Ghiran that I reckon you could find a camping spot a couple k's off the road. Thats where I would try.
4 hrs to Dimmy from Melb.....not a bad trip after work

thanks Bonz - will have a look see.
By the time everyone gets ready after school etc and we actually head off I reckon it will be about 6pm. We live in berwick and Friday night probably take us about an hour to get onto the Western ring road. Kids will be grumpy so figure a lazy stop on the way. Don't have much to do in Dimboola saturday so can wake up late and still be 1/2 way there.

Best spot for you is
middle creek campground Mount Buangor state park under Mt Cole. Roughy 12k past Beaufort turn right,
toilets, water, fire
places, tables and a huge
picnic shelter with a fireplace inside and a few large tables, I usually sleep in the
shelter.
Ferntree
camp is further up the same rd, smaller site with no
shelter.

We stayed at the nice big
camp flat site at the Mt Buangor State Park - follow dirt road in for about 8 kms. We didn't stop in at Langri Ghiran as the former was nice for the night - it may be similar.
Toilets and barbecues, some water from the tank, but it was stained with leaves. Kangaroos came around and watched us in the morning. Other campers were
well spread out through the huge area, and amongst trees on the fringes, so it was a quiet
bush camp, even though some campers had youngsters.

We use the Langi Ghiran
campsite. Turnoff is signposted - 10k on the
melbourne side of
Ararat. And its 5k's off the highway. Has
toilets and plenty of space.

Greenhill
Lake - 3 km E of
Ararat looked OK when we stopped there for a meal a couple of times. It has the advantage of not being far off the highway.
