my 100 series has developed this flapping noise in the right hand vent when the fan is on...gets louder/faster when fan goes to higher speed....been there since new ...dealer couldnt hear last two services but it is nearly always constant now....not worried about it.... as the aircon works anyhow and its also under warranty..

But, does anyone have any idea what could be loose in the ducting to flap ? ...and no its not a leaf!...the noise is coming form the right hand vent discharge air duct only.....do the use the ducts as a route for cable/wiring looms?

sounds like a leaf, it could be stuck in the ducting to the rh vent, try switching that vent off and listening through the other vents. As you say it has been there since new I have had vehicles in the past with similar problems that turned out to be caused by a parts label inside the ducting coming unstuck which should have been removed before assembly anyway. Try gently blowing some compressed air back down that vent and see if the noise changes position, but the only real way of fixing it is to pull the fan housing and/or ducting apart.

Had the same in the Jackaroo and yep turned out to be a leaf. I'd say if you want to find the cause you are going to have to remove the ducting.

If you can remove the duct near the fan you can try turning it on to make sure it is something in the duct. Then work you way along

I was thinking of a spare mudflap but yours sounds more likely ;-)

Could be either a leaf or a label.

Will sound as though it is close to the vent, but need not be.

However one thing to try is to squirt some water down the vent (not a lot, just a few squirts of a plant spray bottle) and leave it overnight. The (dry) leaf or label may absorb enough to become soft and then escape the little kink that is stopping it coming out when you put the fan on.

just a suggestion.

Hi MrNo1 ..........

Could also be a bit of inside tape of some sort that has 'partially let go' and the adhesive has become covered with dust, preventing it from 're-sticking!'

Had that problem in LH vent on theTtroopy ... real @#%*&%+ of a job to find it!

As for the tape...yep could be.... but why tape on the inside....tad hard to put on inside as compared to outside I would think?

Had the same thing recently in the Hilux. I was convinced it was a leaf or twig. Put up with it for a couple of weeks and ran the fan on high when I could to 'wear it down'.

One day I noticed it was not there. Guess I eventually wore the end of the leaf (or the fan).

Had very similar issue on new 100 series, but on middle vent. Solved when Toyota had dash apart for stereo issue. Apparently even genuine air con is fitted post manufacture and as such facia and vents are pulled out. Vents and ducts are a push fit with an adhesive foam seal tape on each duct that mates together to seal and hold in place. In my case foam seal on one duct had started to peel off (through sloppy installation and jam insted of push techniques). Ended up that loose tale of seal was now sticking up into middle of duct and flapped when fan turned on. I also noticed apart from noise like you describe, that airflow out of that vent was reduced when compared to the others as seal was no longer good - not by much but noticeable. Toyota pulled apart, re-applied new foam seal and gently pushed back into place - all good now

Cheers
