Ann,
Last year 9000 people at the races. If you have not booked at the caravan
park I don't think that you will get in.
There were a lot of people on the river bank
camping and any where else there was a patch of ground.
The only place for a shower was at the caravan
park. The shower block was not designed for that many people. I went to have a shower at 2: 30am and still had to wait another 30min to get in.
Toilets are not as bad as they have porta loos around the town.
It is all part of the
Birdsville races

Last year the caravan
park was not taking bookings and as far as I know they do not take bookings. It is on a first come first served basis.
It may be different this year if there is new owners?????

I had heard from those that have done the races that the smart thing is to set up
camp on the banks of the Diamantina, out of town a bit. You can turn down the side of the river in both directions, both sides, from the main bridge. Lots of
camping spots to pick from - the later you arrive the further you drive it seems. Re a
toilet and showers - the campers I've shared trips with can always find a discrete spot for the "doings" - and if there's only a few days involved, its marvellous how fresh one can stay with some "inventive ablution practices".

Sounds like an opportunity to set up a temporary shower block and make a few quid to cover the holiday!! LOL
better ring my mate Kenny and see if they rent out shower cubicals.

Happens all the time - just remember to burn the paper and bury it all deep. Take a few light weight poles and a bit of polytarp and make a shelter and either dig a deep hole and provide plenty of ashes to cover the "doings" or take a Porta Pottie if the group is big enough. If the latter you'd either have to bury its contents deep or find a
dump point in town.
Oh - and off road books are a bit hard and shiny - better to use newspaper. LOL
Enjoy though
Max
