To be honest I know nothing about these radios, would this be worth getting or better with a sat phone ????. I will say a radio at least one can contact others in the bush i dare say.
What would the approx cost of an antenna ?????

Hi Brian,
I have a 8528 fitted to the mighty Patrol. I bought it at the right price with an autotune antenna. I have joined VKS737 and they are a very helpful bunch. The network is great and there are many other advantages, for me being able to listen to the cricket or the BBC around
places like the CSR is just some.
Antenna's can be expensive such as an autotune. If you are happy to travel and then change your antenna / length when stopped, a tapped antenna is the way to go. Especially when they are around $200-300 vs $600-1000 for a second hand autotune. E-bay should give you some options and you can see what's out there. I think $1000 without the antenna is a tad to much, especially considering the 8528 radio technology is around 20 years old.
Have fun shopping around
Dave

Brian - Re Satphones - there is an article at www.vks737.on.net (Satphones link) that may be of interest - seeks to make a balanced comment on options.
