Ford didn’t wouldn’t lend you there’s, no surprises there.

Get this one off E-bay in the U.S use it once then sell it agene or keep it, rent it out, what ever.

How did it all go mate, getting the parts from the guys in the states, any problems, or was it easer than it sounded LOL
Let us know when you get it running agene.

No mate, He has just replaced the timing chains and tentioners, On the Explorer SOHC V6, with out writing a essay about the timing set up on these engines, basically once the seid parts have been replaced to toque the Camshaft sprocket’s up and keep the timing correct you need the above pictured tool kit to lock the cam timing in position.

Cheers.

did some research for you 2day, ford dealers dont have the tool in Lismore or Ballina, send the complete engine to Brisbane, so i dont think your dealer will have the tool either.

so plan B, i had a similar problem lining up a camshaft on a BMW
i got a copy of procedures from ford, let me know if you need these.
your firing order should be 1 4 2 5 3 6, I'm not sure which is number one on your engine though, it will be either one of the cylinders on the front bank
you will need a chain pair of VICE GRIPS part number "20r" they look like a 10" vice grips with a 500mm long chain, cost $60 from Repco, Blackwoods

position engine on T.D.C. no 1, there should be timing marks for this on front of the block. the crankshaft may need holding with a socket and breaker bar, you will need an assistant to hold this.

the tensioner should be on the slack side of the chain, i.e. on non-drive load side. wrap VICE GRIPS around eccentric lobe on camshaft, that O.E. tool locates on and turn camshaft in opposite direction of engine rotation.

so lobes on cam for no. 1 cyl. are both pointing up at the same angle, that is exhaust lobe is same angle past 12 o'clock as is same angle of inlet before 12 o'clock. ensure there is no slack in timing chain by holding it in the opposite direction of normal rotation. now tighten cam bolt up.

install this cams tensionor

now carefully turn crankshaft 360 degrees in direction of rotation, this will result in no. 5 being on T.D.C. ensuring no valves hit.

repeat the above three paragraphs for this cam.

now carefully turn engine in direction of rotation making sure no valves hit and no. 1 lobes are back up the top again.

now carefully turn crankshaft 360 degrees in direction of rotation and now no. 5 lobe should on top.

you now have your engine timed correctly, ready to go exploring in your explorer

Hey thanks guys! all this info is helpful. My mechanic friend has come through with a lot of begging and hassling and got the tool on loan from someone at ford in Brisbane( persistance pays off ). Fingers crossed and she should be running by this time next week. B.T.W anyone after the rear seat to make theirs a 7 seater?

Not a bad way to get around it if you can’t get the tool, Graham

Hay Jase, Were any of your chain guides or tentioners damaged, like have pieces/ chucks missing, snapped or worn badly?

If so they often end up in the sump and or stuck to the oil pump pick up screen.

Cheers.

both chain guides were broken and the peices were all through the sump mate! oil residue was quite sludgy which is what may have caused the tensioners to fail. Has been cleaned now and will hopefully get another 245 000kms out of it.

Yeah mate if looked after these engines have a good service life the timing set up just let's em down, sounds like it may have had a few skipped oil changers or had cheep oil used in it at some stage.

Cheers.

Any good name 10W30, 10W40 or10W50 oil

I use Penrite HPR 10 (10W50) changed every 10,000k or 6months and only use the Ford Motorcraft oil filters.

I wouldn’t use anything heaver than a 10 weight oil in them. They originally took a 5W30 but Ford Australia revised that a few years ago to 10w30, I use the 10W50 as a lot of my applications are long miles on the black top with off-road work as well, the car spend next to no time in city traffic.

A few people in the states have run a 0W30 in them from new with 0 problems, but I wouldn’t recommend switching to that with 200,000+ on the clock.

Cheers.

Mate use Mercron V type fluid.

It’s $20 a quart from ford.

Other wise use Penrite Fully synthetic ATF at $45 for 4 litres as this meats the Mercron V standards.

Don’t use a Dexton Type fluid in it; It needs to have a Mercron V spec fluid used.

You may need to get the penrite ordered in as not many Auto parts shops stock it on the shelf, I only no of 2 shops in Perth that have it as a shelved item.

Give Penrite a call directly and they will tell you who they supply it to in your aria

Cheers.
