hi my name is matt,
i was wanting to take my girlfriend away for a weekend to
bendethera going in from
braidwood as the trek details and was wondering if our 1998 3 door rav4 would be up to the challenge. the thing is that this site recommends low range but the rav doesn't have that, although it is very low geared anyway. i am pretty sure it would be ok but would very much appreciate any
feedback. also would we need extra fuel if around town we get 450km's out of 50liters?
thanks

scooby,
Don't try it.
Not only doe you need low range but also some ground clearance.
The Rav would have to be dragged out.
The vehicle might be able to get in but getting out will be a different matter.
If it rains the tracks become almost impassable.
I have spent most of the day going 5km just trying to get to the wet weather track out.

Wayne ,
I agree with that absolutely if he comes in from
Braidwood , but he should be able to do it from the Moruya side shouldn't he ?

Willie,
Getting in is not a big problem, it is getting out.
From Moruya it is fine until you get to the
intersection that take you up to the trig point. From there the track does go down to the river but there are still some hills that would have to be travelled. Then there are the two river crossings, should be low but you never know in that area.
It is the drive back out, the conservation mounds that he could get stuck on plus the wash outs and ruts.
A lot would depend on experience but it is not the place to learn where a Rav can go.

Ground clearance won't be an issue, the tracks aren't real rough, just steep. Not sure I'd like to do it without a low range though. HT tyres could also be a problem if it's a little damp

Hi Matt,
I agree with Wayne, I think you'll have trouble with ground clearance, even over the conservation mounds, and need low-range for getting up the steep sections. The easiest way in is from Moruya, but you still need to negotiate several km's of challenging track.
Another think to consider is if it does go pear shaped, have you (and the Rav4) got the recovery items to get out of strife? eg recovery hooks, shovel, snatch strap, rated shackles, jack (with high lift capacity) and most importantly the knowledge to use them?
Personally I wouldn't risk it, but if you do, try to travel with another dedicated 4WD with recovery equipment. If you post up when you are going, someone here might tag along?
Cheers,
Jezza
