Whats the max speed that a TD42 gq can do as compared to a diesel Toyota 80?
What increase can you get with a turbo added?

They will both do and reach the legal speed limits in this country, anything over that is immaterial, as they will both fall over and have a hernia :))))))))))

I have had my 4.2 Troopy up to 140kph, working hard for 1 klm then back to cruising at 90kph, I would presume a Turbo Nissan should be happy at the Legal 130kph

I checked your members rig and saw you drive a Rodeo. I have only just stopped laughing. I realise that the only reason anyone could put such a ridiculous statement on this site is to have a bit of fun and get a reaction.
All 4WDs are prone to rolling over some more than others. Rodeo's have deplorable handling characteristics. They are more prone to rolling over than patrols. They are also one of the most uncomfortable vehicles I have ever driven.
Most patrol motors are very reliable, especially the 4.2TD. Now as far as hernias go the 3.0TD has an inbuilt hernia.

Yes it was to have a laugh not to get 'bites', alas your attempt to get me to bite re Rodeo's will not work as I am happy with my purchase and do not have to enter
mine is bigger then yours.
I was however trying to get a rise from the original poster as to who has the greatest top speed as has been stated by others below that top end speed is not revalent in 4wding.

Well said.
I cannot understand why top speed is important. The speed limit for most of Australia is 110 km/h and in the NT 130 km/h. As long as a vehicle will cruise at 110 km/h it is not a problem.
4WDs are not sports cars. They have inferior handling to cars and should therefore be driven slower and with more care.
As for my not liking Rodeos. It is my personal opinion and if you like them good for you. I am 190 cms and weigh about 130 kgs. The Rodeo is built for someone a lot smaller than me.

Yes the over height endowed of the race would have dramas:)); fortunately I fit into the 5' 10"" scale and fit OK. I am jealous of where you live if your handle reflects your location.

Why is top speed important? probably the last thing on the list for a 4wd.

Agree Truckster . I'd rather sit on 95 to 100 on the blacktop and 80 to 85 (if it's good ) on the gravel . That way i know we'll get there in one peace Errol

Spot on Trucky.......
Hell, even when I used to ride big capacity (for the day) Jap bikes, the main criteria we used to talk about was "acceleration". Top speed was immaterial for the most part unless you wanted to pay more to THE MAN than was necessary (which happened to me with monotonous regularity!!!)
AFAI'm concerned, engine braking (for downhill decents etc) is of more interest to me than top speed or acceleration rates etc when it comes to a 4x4

I disagree.... i have driven many 1hz. some go
well better than others. I tested
Mine when buying it to get an idea of the motors condition and to
test the cooling system. Proved invaluable i identified the motor was fine but the radiator was not

Good point Truckster.
The ride and traction on a rough track is most probably more important.

My 4.2 diesel GQ, 1991, can get up to 130 kmh on the flat, downhill i got it up to 140kmh. Didn't feel too safe though. It can cruise on 100 kmh all day on the bitumen without raising a sweat. Towing that speed drops to about 90-95. That's what 4wds are made for.

Wasn't a 4WD but I frequently took my Rover SD1 straight six to something over 210kph on the European motorways - amazing I'm still here don't you think? :) Such a speed would be a hanging offence in Australia I suspect :)
