We have recently had to replace the engine & gearbox spline in our 2001 GUII TDI 3.0ltr Nissan Patrol. We've had the vehicle since new and we have always had it serviced regularly and looked after our investment. As a side point, we do not tow anything.
The problem manifested itself as a sudden and severe coolant loss, subsequent tests suggested that the head was cracked. As repairs progressed, we discovered that the engine had gone in No4 cylinder, rendering it in need of immediate replacement. Whilst repairing these problems, we discovered that the gearbox spline in 5th gear was about to go BANG. These repairs have cost us a hefty $20K plus and since we have done 150,000km, the vehicle is out of warranty. Keep in mind that this is a diesel engine and at 150,000kms it supposedly isn't even run in.
We complained to Nissan Motor Company and they have in turn offered us $1K to help us out with "our out of pocket expenses.. Without Prejudice". Very generous NOT.
I am interested in hearing back from anyone who has experienced similar problems as I have no intentions of letting Nissan Motor Company off the hook so easily.
Please reply or email me with your tales of woe, please include details.

I feel your pain but why do people buy these things - it is clearly not a matter of if the engine will go but when.
I really feel for you - but anyone with a 3 litre patrol should be gettingb rid of them - it is not worth the risk or the worry - if I had one - I would be having too many sleepless nites - the issue seems to be coming up on this
forum about once a week so clearly these cars are dropping like flies.
I hope you really hit Nissan and do what is required to get justice for yourself and others - good luck and I hope all works out
well.

Ted sorry for your issues but I can't help but ask the question.
Where have you been hiding??
These issues are
well documented on here and other forums and I can't help but wonder why you would even consider paying the bill yourself without taking Nissan Australia to task in a serious way first?
Did you really not know about these common problems with the 3 litre TD before it happened?
Do an archive search on here and see just how many threads are on record on this site alone over this problem.
I really hope it works out for you.

Sorry Ted I just notices on your profile that you claim to have now fitted a 6.5L V8 Chevy???
So you did not pay a Nissan dealer to repair or replace the 3.0 TD but you want them to pay for it??
I think you now have a problem!

"These repairs have cost us a hefty $20K plus"
Oh no, The Even worse news now is you could have put a 6.5 Turbo Chev V8 in it for that price.

Well at least he's done something right eh!
But seriously, I know there's a lot of guys on here that genuinely and rightly defend thier 3.0 litre Nissans, and I'm sure I'd do the same if I owned one, but it's getting a bit obvious that this engine is dog ain't it,,,,,,,a dog that ya wouldn't know or speculate who it was gonna bit next.

Ted,
If you where in NSW I would suggest you contact your "Fair Trading" Motor section So I would think that Victoria would have a similar set-up.
NSW knows only to
well about the 3.0L problems & I believe would take Nissan to task over these problems.
Any way have a go it won't cost you anything. Also make it known that Nissan have known of both of these problems for a long time but would not do a recall in auz for them.
Good Luck & give em hell

Hi
Nissan 3 Liter Motor's
After reading several post in regard to these motor's and i do understand some people wish to defend there Nissan's.
However i decided today to ring the Motor Auctions and just see what these 4 WD are bringing.
I was told NO One Want's them because of the problems there having with the Motor's and Gearbox's.
They are bringing around $14000 early 90 model's
I recall reading somewhere that someone was saying there has been an adaptor plate being made to fit a Perkin's Diesel into said Nissan's has anyone any imformation on this ?
It would seem a good deal to buy a Nissan 4WD at the Auction's and put a Perkins in make a good Bush Basher.
With Thank's Jon

Mate, the 3 litre that is being talkied about in this post didn't hit the showrooms until 2000. I think you might be getting mixed up with the 1990's Petrol GQ Patrol 3litre, which had the same motor as the Nissan Skyline of the day. However, I don't think anybody would pay you $14K for one of those either.
A "decent" GU 3 Litre Patrol (don't ask me to define "decent") should still fetch about $20K, depending on kilometers etc.

The other day they were 3.5ltr patrols. This guy (goingplatinumcomau) is very ill informed. The last post by him was the worst case of foot in mouth i have ever seen. Not credible at all.

The 3l RB30 skyline engine was a good motor although underpowered by todays standards. I would be happy if
mine was still worth 14k after its 300k / 16 years of faultless service.

Only issue after nearly 100,000 pretty hard kms is one my auto locking hubs died. And before I get jumped on they were always used manually
thought I'd replace them with new (genuine) manual ones, but ohno they are way to expensive,$680.00 ea. So I put on a second hand set from a GQ, cheap as chups.
Thought about using AVM hubs but was warned by a few people to by a second set as spares.
The little oiler has performed flawlessly and I do expect it to keep doing so.

yes
rock crawler from 2003 on they nissan seem to have pretty much sorted the problem which appears to have been almost certainly a high temperature issue read EGT but i dont think anyone knows for sure except nissan and it probably was a combo of issues as many of these things are - i now have a 2004 series 1V
and traded in a 2001 on it at 128Ks on the speedo which incidently never gave me any hassles at all but nevertheless i was really happy to move on the 2001 - and maybe i was a bit lucky cause it was right in the middle of the ones that were going bang
i have heard about a couple of so called later model 2003 / 2004 3.0 gu 's that have supposedly blown the turbo and then the engine but no real proof and the 3.0 L TD motors now appear to be ok
IMHO they are top quality value for money 4wd which goes anywhere with an added front locker - maybe a bit underpowered but a dtronic really helps when towing - but then we did the cape and the old telegraph track last year when creeks were very full in late june towing a fully loaded KK 1500 kg and never bogged once - whereas others in our party and around us did - but yes we are not gung ho and we took it carefully
see you greg

Just receintly I advised a blown 3.00L owner to take a hard line with Nissan. Nissan then came good with all the parts but no labor.
The more noise you make the more "Nisson will listen".
Go to NSW fair trading if in NSW
