hi, i'm new to the world of 4x4 and just bought a 92 hilux with 237000 on the clock, what i want to know is would a 15-40 oil be thick enough. i just put rimula super 15-40 in but seems pretty thin. so with your experience do you think this would be thick enough?
ps the book says put a 20-40 in but i can't find a diesel oil that's 20-40 only 15-40, 15-50 penrite and 20-60 penrite.

hello Luke B
Have owned a couple of diesel hilux's stick to 15w40 grade make sure you change it every 5000k as per toyotas specs i used to change my oil and filter every time at 5000k oil is cheaper than hard internal metal parts these japanese diesels make a lot of soot which causes oil thickening and if left in to long can turn to jelly and really totals the motor take a tip from and old mechanic seen many fail fromlack of care

I work as a mechanic and the company i work for exclusively used Fuchs lubricants at one stage but ended up having nothing but trouble with thier products. Excessive wear in gear type drives was of major concern. Oil samples are regually sent to CAT for testing from each piece of equipment and the results nearly always came back with warnings usually to the effect that the oil did not meet correct viscosity specs, even when sending new oil from sealed drums. We have now changed to a different brand of oil and because of this I would not recomend Fuchs oil to anyone.

Luke,
There is nothing wrong with
Shell Rimula 15-40.
I use it all the time. The other good thing about it, it is available just about ever where you go. Mixing oil of different brands is not always good.
The problem with a question like the one you posted is that you will get 10 different answers from 10 different people. Don't worry and enjoy the Hilux.

Another vote for
shell rimula. I run this on most of the boats I have worked on and all my diesel cars, I have owned, even one rebuilt petrol engine.
As a motor gets older just have to service more regularly. Oils cheap diesels are not.

If you live in a high atitude area I would change the oil and filter every 4000ks, in a 3l . Last forever if you do that. The main problem areas were arround
Cooma,
Orange And Armidale
Cheers Pete
