Looking to stop in at Byfield on our way North to the Gulf in a week or so.
Heard good reports on camping and fishing there, but know little about the place (but have found a bit via Google).

Looks like I have a choice of Red Rock Camp Ground or Waterpark Creek within the NP. Other than what is in Camps Australia 3, I know nothing about either.

Anyone familiar enough with the area to give suggestions? We are looking to camp for a few days and do some fishing and crabbing. We are set up for beach / rock fishing and also have the tinnie on board.

Some 'local' advice would be really appreciated.

Hi

The better camping spot within Byfield would be at Upper Stoney Creek, Great swimming hole and the creek is running pretty well with the recent rain. You would need to book via the QPWS site, some people are not amused these days if you dont abide by the system. Mind you,I'm not that amused by their system(another story). RedRock does allow dogs and is self registering.
Corio bay is close by and is a pretty spot , reasonable fishing and crabbing . To get there travel through the Rydges Resort, along a bit of dirt and come to the Bay. launch your boat straight of the beach. Another route is along Farnborough Beach to Corio. Access to the beach is through Bangalee located along the road to Rydges. Keep an eye on the tides but travelling the beach saves a bit of dirt.
If you are chasing crabs, the mighty Fitroy is not far away.

Enjoy your time in CQ

Thats a bit unfair Andrew. I lived in Rocky in the early days when Macs beer was in existince. Inch of fitzroy mud in the bottom and I survived.
We used to reckon it was too thick to drink and too thin to plow.
Brings back memories.

Cheers Howard.

Norm C,
Red Rock- is an ok camp site, next to a creek, plently of mozzies.
Water Park Creek- Is a nice camp ground, next to a creek.
If you continue along the dirt road past Water Park Creek, this will lead you to 5 Rocks. and onto 9 mile beach. It is only about another 45 minutes drive. You can camp on the beach at nile mile. There is also a township up there called Stockyard Point. The beach is accessable with your CT as well.

Norm,
I would agree with others that Upper Stony is a nice camp ground. It is probably about an hours drive to 9 mile from Upper Stony. Nine mile beach would also be good but could be very windy, also to get to 9 mile beach there is a fairly large, soft sand dune to get up and over. When we were there in Sep 06 a mate of mine in his Rodeo had a few drama's getting through the sand. It was very soft and deep, his main drama's were with clearance. His tyres were deflated for the sand. But with a bit of thought and prep you should get through.

Cheers Drew

Thanks for the responses. I finaly found a bit of a map on an EPA website.
Red Rock looks to be on Waterpark Creek, but as commented not a great camp site.
Waterpark Creek campground is surprisingly also on Waterpark Creek, but further upstream and there is no boat ramp marked. There is a boat ramp marked further down the creek near Corio Bay. Possibly at or near Corbetts Landing, but the map isn't very clear.

Upper Stoney seems to be a fair distance from any fishing, but if it's a good camp ground, it might be the go as a base. As long as the road's aren't too rough, I can use the fold up trailer to take the boat to the creek.

Thanks again for the info.

G'Day Norm, I was up there at christmas and reckon that 9 mile beach is the go. Sure, Stoney Ck is really nice but it's a bloody long drive to any fishing! Plus the tracks out to Five Rocks or 9 Mile Beach can be rough and quite soft so you don't want to be driving out to the beach each day from your base camp at Stoney.

All things being equal - you'll love it up there! It's bloody beautiful! :-)

Cheers
Scoey!

Hi Norm,I live in the local Yeppoon/Byfield area and I believe that Red Rock has been closed (apparently).A little further on you can camp at Water Park Creek which is a great spot and has electric barbecues.. Stoney Creek is another good spot and is earlier on, approx 5km or so from when you first enter the forestry. Both areas have good camp sites, self registration , hiking tracks and swimming .From Waterpark Creek you can continue to the ocean via a dirt track that turns to sand, this leads to 5 Rocks and nine mile beach. Nine mile area is National Park and has camping spots provided before you go down to the beach, else where you can camp where you like near the beach. You can then fish any where along the coast and on the southern end of Nine mile find the track to take you to Corio Creek which is the estaury part of Water park Creek. Here you can pump for yabbies and the nine mile is full of sand worms at low tide. Hope that helps a little....Cheers Scott
