Another place we are looking at dropping into for a few days on our way to the Gulf is
Cape Palmerston NP. Don't know much about it, but I'm told it is worth a visit. I've found a bit of info on the web which suggests there is a reasonable
camp ground at Cape Creek (though I can't see it on the map and don't know what facilities are there.
Anyone know this area and able to provide info on camping, fishing, sightseeing?
Thanks
Norm C

Facilities are very basic, you will need to be self-sufficient. The trip in to the
campsite from the bitumen is around an hour, either by the inland road (is narrow, windy through melaleuca forests and can be impassable when wet) and
the beach run is easy, though their is one spot around the heads that you need to be aware of.
Fishing is good, though you must be aware that the tides are one of the largest on the eastern seaboard of Australia, around 6m at times.
Campsites are shown on the EPA website here ==> https:// Site Link
Check out some information on CP contained in the Dirty Weekends in Central Queensland book here ==> Site Link While at that site, download the waypoints for the
Cape Palmerston trip (and the rest of CQ for that matter) from this file ==>

Cape Palmerston is good for fishing, has a nice view, though apart ffrom that, it is more of an area to just sit back and relax.
Hope that helps.

Hi Norm,
We hope to be heading there tomorrow for a couple of days (weather pending). I have been only once before on a quick day trip but didn't get to the creek side of the Cape. A few of my mates say its a great spot to go fishing and crabbing. I will let you know how it goes when we get back and hopefully send a few photo's.
We will have the tinnie with us so I hope to explore quite a bit.
Regards
David

Sorry to say I didn't get away camping as I was stuck up at the Burdekin Pipeline late Friday night trying to fix a repeater. Will have to wait another 2 weeks now as my wife works every second weekend :-(
Positive though, I found a couple of nice campsites along the
Bowen River :-)

Hi Norm,
cape palmerston is a great place to spend a couple of days but you do need to be self sufficiant, if you are comming from
Sarina you need to turn left at the Ilbilbie road house and follow this road for about 10 Km then turn left onto a dirt track signposted Cape Palmerstone follow this to the end and then turn left onto
the beach.
You can follow
the beach for about 10 km then you head up and over the headland and the first
campsite you come to is
Windmill bay and in my opinion the best
camp site but can be breezy, the only facilities is one long drop.
The beach run is ok except for long nose point and the sand is very soft here and you need to keep right up on the high side and have your tires at about 15 psi. We have towed our camper into this area twice and both times have had the hole area to ourselves.
The Qld equivelant of
parkes and wildlife have a brochure and mud map for the park and this is very helpful

Hi Norm
I have been their a couple of times and their is a couple of sheltered spots along
the beach to
camp, if you go around the cape you will find lots of mossies, sand is really firm apart from the little bit around the headland. First time I went I drove a little Toyota Tercel and it had no problems.
Have fun

Cape Palmerston NP, We just left there early last week on our trip up to Mackay, beautiful spot.... So nice we just set up
camp for the night, just on the entry to
the beach, on the grass covered pebbles... Majic spot, good fishing, we just fished off
the beach, met a couple of fella's who were fishing around the northern point, they had a very good catch.. Make sure you stop at the little
shop on the left, just past the turn off to the NP. (Ilbilby). They are quite helpful on the area, and have plenty of bait and tackle..

Norm C,
Been there a few times but only in winter. There can be a few mossies and sandies at Cape Creek. One long drop
toilet.
When we first arrived there the tide was in and right up to the top of the sand. Six hours later you had to walk to the top of the sand to find the water level. Fished and crabbed ok.
The last time we were there you could virtually hand feed a large groper off the
sandy beach at the creek.
As previously stated watch the soft sand in
places.
Cheers,
Bros.
