In the market for a change in our internet access and today got a two sided offer page from Bigpond. It looked ok too. The 128 kbs ISDN dialup could have gone out the window easily to
sign up for Next G wireless.
Aside from what some o the regulatory bodies are saying about the fraudband that we are offered in Australia, the offer for a powered modem as distinct to the laptop card or the USB modem for a 1GB account for a $40 a month. That didn't sound too bad.
I had to look around at the online prices and the other options. That was for the SUPER G FAST 550kbps to 1.5Mbps but 15 cents per Mb for some over use rates. BUT up to 30 cents per MB on some plans. That is VERY expensive
Just be aware though it is an offer for 6 MONTHS. After the six months it reverts to the true pricing at double that offer price. Hope you don't get caught on it.

You may very
well be right Richard. There are a couple if those guys circulating as you
well know. Not making a decision for a couple of months at least. Just be satisfied with the slow pace of change. 12 kms from an ADSL exchange means poor access :-(((( Unless you go satellite.

We have a CDMA card modem for the country retreat, it's better than dial up but still a lot slower than city broadband.
hope next G is faster

Yes and another thing. With wireless you connected full time. So even if you are not browsing, your computer is talking to the tower 1kb every 2 seconds and all that goes towards you monthly Mb total. This what I have been told and I assume it is correct. You must disable your computer from the system if you want to Log Off!!!
In the mean time the wireless installers are now 3 days overdue at my place. I am also waiting for ADSL. Have been activitated but the router is still to arrive. Life seems to be one looooong wait these days...lol
Cheers

Hey Willem ,
i stay connected for many hours at a time - with nothing running (no msn or skype) and have not noticed my usage blow out.
I am under the impression it uses very little bandwidth just being connected.
I will stand corrected.
Cheers.

On a few of the MSN caravan groups many of the members have gone onto a BigPond plan - 256 kB/s - IG per month for $50. see Site Link
The modem (cost $250) has a 6 V input from a power brick and has 2 antennas on it for diversity operation. If you are using it in a caravan one of these antennas can be replaced with an external antenna.
This seems to be the best priced option at regular prices. I do not know if the half price 6 month offer is available on this.

Ah yes, good old Telstra. If you compare the cost of broadband via NextG and broadband via ADSL, you get a good idea of how much you are being ripped off. OK, the
infrastructure costs more, but do they have to get their money back in one year???
In truth, the NextG prices are crap - and they always will be. This is because Telstra has resisted allowing any of their competitors access to the NextG network. End result: no competition. There is some relief in sight, Optus and one other syndicate have announced a rollout of their own networks.
The problem is that these other companies will concentrate on the high volume areas first, which means it will take a long time to reach the bush. For me personally, that is bad news. My wife and I are off on our long planned great Oz adventure and we will need broadband to keep in touch with the kids and to update our website.
You can get a better broadband service in Bali than you can here.

Just had a look at the prices for mobile NextG.
Im on a 10 hr $29.95 Super (the fastest) plan, as I use this infrequently for travelling.
That appears to be scrapped, with the prices now increased.
Looks like the honeymoon (cheaper rates if you can call them that) is over.

You are right Im.away, understand about their tendencies and their high profit per dollar of revenue. The shareholder in me likes that part - as long as others pay.
Col_and_Jan, the other option is a Data Pack purchased when you need it which goes to the fastest rate just a month at a time paid when you need one. Very high rates if you over use though.

John, not sure how often you access the net, but I can assure you that 1GB is tiny on broadband. I used that in 3 days without downloading huge files, naughty pix etc. I very quickly changed plans to the unlimited bigpond one. It's not cheap, but makes the net far less frustrating and much more user friendly.

Footyl,
I would assume that it is similar to digital cameras. With film, you would shoot twice on a wasp, building it's mud humidicrib.
Digital ? 100 and counting.
To all and sundry, we're finally on broadband.
Woohoo:
And stuff the Lying Little Rodent who sold us the plan.(Aaron, [not his real name] are your ears burning?? 500Mb indeed. 30x faster indeed!! ) I hope your DJ job pays
well, my friend.

C'mon guys ,
weve got to hound the caravan parks to offer free wireless.
unlimited plans are
well within their reach - they have nothing to lose from offering free wireless - there sure to gain
caravan parks are our homes, we need an alternative to paying telstra/bogpond overpriced next g, cdma1x and evdo plans. they know there not going to make a dollar out of us in 5 years.
when booking sites, ask if they have free wireless!!
when you see them using laptops or internet in the office - ask them if they've got free wireless.
they will come around eventually
cheers

It wouldn't have to be free. Just priced reasonably. A park I stayed at recently was $15.00 for 7 days, unlimited. I figured that was OK as I have a $79.00 per month account at
home anyway. So I went for it. It wasn't as fast as
home, but it was
well and truly good enough.
