Ive been watching the cyclones closely as my son is in
Newman. As he said, not much happened where they are just a lot of water.
With Jacob, the last report showed that it was weakening so can only live in hope.

Apparently the dongas in some camps weren't tied down, and they weren't evacuated according to the SMH. They are now !

Seems strange to me, but I havent worked in them.

With at least one death and quite a few hospitalized, I believe that questions are being asked. Apparently BHP have now decided to evacuate anyone who wants to go. Bit late for that.
When I was in that area in June, people seemed a bit blase about cyclones (shades of Tracey !) "She'll be right mate, we just get out of the way of em"
Yeah, right.

The BHP camps are permanent and have seen many cyclones over the years . Given that their buildings are of a satisfactory standard , and BHP has proven cyclone procedures in place , there is no requirement to evacuate . The FMG
camp appears to have had serious deficiences in at least the tie downs and this indicates that their procedures were also deficient , or non existant . The Indee Station fatality is harder to understand as the station owners are very experienced with cyclones . I don't know if the donga that failed there was a station donga or a mining donga . It is thought that the fatality may have been partly caused by a medical condition brought on by the damage to the donga .
It is correct to say that many people were becoming blase about cyclones and George was a wake up call .

Daughter is NE of
Newman and whilst we worried during the night as to her safety etc, she slept through it, obviously wasn't too bad where she was!!!!!!

My son and d.i.l are in Wickham (north of
Karratha) - they had 7 cyclones through around this time last year. They are a bit blasé up there, and a cyclone means a day off work, and a good reason to have 'a cyclone party'. Of course mining company houses in the towns are built to withstand cyclones, and all the trees around son's house went last year.
We have quite a few ExplorOz members in
Karratha and surrounds - hope you have no damage where you are, as Jacob is still on its determined bee-line towards
Karratha, although not as strong as George.
