My name is Luke and i've been searching the net non-stop to find the locations of the repeaters in queensland. sure i've found many lists but names of
places don't mean much to me. I was wandering if anyone knows were on the net or anywhere else i could get a map of some kind that shows just where the repeater is and maybe the expexted coverage. one other thing, i am confused why a repeater more than 10 kms away can recieve my signal when a friend less than 5 kms away can't. any responce would be much appreciated. thank you.

Luke,
2nd question first. Your friend probably isn't on top of a
hill with a tuned antenna, heaps of power and a much better radio.
1st question: The way I do it is to have a look at the map and work out the top and bottom latitudes and left and right longitudes of the area I'm interested in and go down the list in the "on the road menu" above and pick the ones that fall into that area. I then use Auslig Map Program which I bought from the "
shop" menu above, type in the co-ordinates and the map is displayed. You can then use the arrow to pinpoint the location. Or, and I do this first, I just type in the place name and if it is on the set of maps, it is displayed.
Luke, become a member and buy the CDs.

Luke,
Have you checked the tab above "On the Road"? In the sub menu is UHF Repeaters. There is also some info under tab "Vehicle requirements" - Communications which may help. The location listings on this site can be dowloaded to maps - I use OzieXplorer which displays each location on demand including channel number!
Final comment! Have you checked is transmitting duplex ie hitting the repeater when required. Simplex mode might not achieve your desired outcome?

Do you think carrying only a
UHF radio is sufficient or should you carry a sat phone also.

Howard,
I am a firm believer in having at least two differing forms of comms. Can get very lonely out there with only UHF. Personally I have HF as
well although I know of lots who carry Sat Phones. I find the disadvantage is that in Emergency only one person hears you - somebody could be close by (out of UHF range!) and you don't know.

Try this site -
http://www.tropinet.com/uhf-repeaters/ - it has search by State, Lat Long, call
sign and Location. The map of Aust allows you to select an area which gives repeaters within a 200 km radius of that point. It also has lists of nearby repeaters within a radius and a small location map. I agree that a lot of the repeater names are not usefull unless you are very familiar with a particulat region.Colin - Subaru Forester
