Well we are down to the final prep and finalising the home stuff before we head off. Probably leave on Thursday morning. Planned stops include Baffle Creek, Byfield NP, Awoonga Dam (Gladstone),Cape Palmerson NP, Peter Faust Dam (Proserpine) and Charters Towers (home town) on our way to Borroloola. Most driving days will be less than 500KM (some much less) and all the named spots and lots more will see us stop for 4 days minimum, some a week or two. This is therefore a much different trip than previous ones.

Hope to get to the Borroloola area around 12 to 14 April. We'll spend about 4 weeks in the Borroloola / Roper Bar area at a few sites (some planned, some we are yet to find). Plan is then to head back into Queensland across the Gulf to Burketown, Normanton, Karumba etc. From there, who knows. We'll plan it as we go and get home (Gold Coast) some time in July.

We are going prepared for all forms of fishing, crabbing, Red Claw / Cheribin, Prawns; anything you can think of except crocodile. Kathryn will be taking her list of Patchwork Shops in all the towns along the way she wants to visit. That's a small price to pay for having her come along on a trip like this, which is largely based around fishing. But we'll do our share of sightseeing etc as the opportunities arise.

Thanks to all those who helped me in planning this trip, particularly in identifying places like Byfield and Cape Palmerston for stops on the way.

It's a tough life, but someone has to do it. Aren't you lucky I volunteered?

Norm and Kathryn,
Have a wonderful time and remeber this is what memories are made of. I might add I read your post and it made me very envious, but I wish you a wonderful time. We have our final daughter doing year twelve in NSW this year so we wont be able to get any holidays in as she wants a really high UAI, but the end is in sight. Barb

Hi Norm - You probably already know about the cafe in the centre of Gin Gin that sell the fresh mud crab sandwiches, and the prawn pies.
We are heading from Ipswich in June. Barkley Tablelands, Cape Crawford, then Lorella Springs on the way to Roper Bar, GRR and Tanami.

I hear the campground at Boynedale at the back of Lake Awoonga is worth a look.
(turn off at Miriam Vale) We will be there over Easter with 30lb line and some Barra lures.

Is Lorella Springs on your itinerary? www.lorellasprings.com/
(on the road from Borroloola to Roper bar).
In case you missed Voxons reply to my question -:
LORELLA Springs....What can i say....
I will compare it to some places i have been to...
I thought it was better than,,,, Lawn Hill, Adels Grove, Litchfield, Lakefield, Kingfisher Camp.............. It depends on what you like....
My most favorite trek is Overland Telegraph Track Cape York.... This place comes a very close second...

Anyway - have a great trip and hope to see you out there sometime.........Keith

Hi Keith,
We know Boynedale well. Our last visit was early Feb. Our camp site!MPG:17!

Kathryn's first barra caught on that trip: !MPG:16!

We will probably drop in there for a couple of days again.

Take some spare lures. On our last trip we had a couple totally smashed by monsters. If fishing around the sticks 30 lb braid and 60 lb leader is the minimum if you want a chance. Great fun if you can hook a couple.

I thought we would drop into Lorella for a day or two. Sounds good. I understand it is pretty expensive though. Plus the Rosie River fishing camp is a fair way off over very rough terrain. Don't know if we could get there with the boat and CT. We'll drop in a check it out.

Sounds like a good trip you are doing. We did the GRR and a lot more last year. A wonderful area. Mitchell Falls is well worth the effort and the King Edward River camp area has to be the best free camp we have experienced.

Yes I found Voxon's post. He certainly liked it.

We'll also check out Limmen River Fishing Camp, King Ash Bay and possibly Manangoora.

Time off. From what?? I'm smart, lucky and almost old enough to not have to ask my boss for time off. Just have to ask her if she'll come with me. Fortunately the answer is always yes. With luck you'll be in the same position some day madfisher.

Hi Norm

Hope you have heaps of fun. We are still dreaming of the big trip. Have only one child left at home, 16 year old still at school.

Have just brought the dream car to travel, have the camper trailer but as soon as we can leave kids to look after themselves, we will be off just like you. When its time I sure will be looking for advice and telling everyone.

Hope you keep us posted on your trip so I know what I can look forward to when I finally live my dream.

Vicki

Hi Norm & Kathryn Sounds like you'll have a great trip, you definitely have a great camper. We did a similar trip last year, have a few suggestions for after Karumba. We headed north from Karumba to Dunbar on the Burke Development road till we got to the road to Palmerville, camped at a nice spot on the Mitchell river, then onto Laura for supplies. Then continued onto Lakefield N/P, camped at seven mile and Kalpowar for some excellent fishing. Left there after a few weeks and headed up to Cape Melville the track is hard and long but the fishing is great, also with lots of big mud crabs out of the creek. From there we headed to Cooktown via Wakooka and Starcke. We have the same camper (great) and it handled the tracks really well.
Enjoy your trip

Have a great time you lucky blighters! Jenny is a quilter too; she has a small sewing machine in the back taking up valuable space so she can make new ones along the way - I love to stir her about it.

I am an ex-pilot who loves to look at all new and old airstrips along the way; she seems to know every quilt shop in Australia. We're even.

Good fishing - all the best, Ray & Jenny

I've convinced Kathryn that she can't carry a sewing machine until we have a caravan, which is 3 years away at least. She is happy enough with that, so just keep Jenny away from her. There is no room!!!

G'day Norm,

Someone seems to have beaten me to the question. When I got home yesterday and told the bride of how accomodating you are with the sewing fetish - I didn't really understand that one because wouldn't she be busy fishing? Getting back to the story, I was asked what I was doing to accomodate the sewing machine on the next trip, I'll be able to go home this avo and say not until the van can she take the machine. Bluddy unreasonable I'm sure.

Hope you have a great trip and please leave a couple of barra for me, ta.

Kind regards

Theo
