recently i've been having the problem of the guages on the dash (speedo, tacho, and temp) all of a sudden dropping to zero. and i don't know where to start looking.
the problem's only stared since my cars been having an overheating problem.
it only happens:-
- after a long day's drive when the cars been running reasonably warm
- when the headlights are on (but not when i turn them on, but its only happened at night)

the dash lights are still on, the fuel guage still works, the clock works, the trip meter goes blank but still has the right distance when it comes back on.
i sometimes comes back on after 10 or 20 min. but last night was off for about 1hr 1/2.

where should i start looking for the problem?

cheers, simple

Gu's have an inherent problem with earthing, what I have done is put a heavy earth !6mm between the chasic and the body, normally when there is an earthing problem though its the fuel gauge that gives you grief, just a thought though

You'd have to look everywhere for earth wires - especially under the dash, and around fuse boxes etc. Could be anywhere - put a spanner on each you find, and if they move at all, undo the bolts, rub everything with emery paper and wipe clean and re-attach.

A mate of mine had an intermittent problem on his Disco for a couple of years - whole thing just went dead for a few minutes then worked happy as Larry. His mechanic went all over it, nothing there. Then, on a trip around corner country it started doing it again - a worry as it was rather wet. One afternoon we both got spanners out and went all over the car. Finally, way down between the battery and the mudguard, little space, found an earth. Took up about 3 flats, and the problem disappeared for ever.

Max,

Just thought of a old trick to find a loose wire.

Turn the car radio on and select a AM frequency that is not a radio station. There should be some static coming through the speakers.

If you then go and shake or move every wire that you can find under the dash or in the engine bay. The offending wire will make the static on the radio go louder or change pitch.

G'day Simple,

Apart from the already stated earthing problem, try looking around the battery and main looms for what they call " Fusable Links" as the name suggests, they are a length of wire which work the same as a fuse. The high radius bend some have seperate the wire.

I've had that happen in a previous vehicle. If you have spotties see what they have done relay wise. The dill that did mine wired them in and I assume the fuses kept blowing cause he put a 35A fuse in the holder. End result was that the fuse holder got very hot and eventually stuffed it completely. Dash lights would go on and off after a few hours driving. Eventually occasional wiff of plastic burning. Also destroyed the light switch.
