For those interested in the gulf country. We just come back from a 4 day run from
Cairns to Mt. Suprise to
Einasleigh and back. The drive through the tablelands was magnificent all lush and green and cool. Mt Suprise pub was a welcome stop and a good feed. Spent the day out at the gem fields and swimming in O'briens
creek, kids had a ball (dirt track out was
well maintained). Next day we went out to
Einasleigh (Few corrigations and washouts were clear) pleanty of
water in the river for swimming and some good sites for
free camping.
Copperfield gorge is another great spot for a swim and jumping of cliffs will bring the dare devil out in you. Also it is something about outback pubs that the beer and rum and coke taste so much better,
Einasleigh pub was also a good stop.
Had a little rain over night but all in all a great trip.

Hi Richo
We're going to be in that area in august, any further info that you could pass on in relation to camps, things to see etc. would be appreciated

Hi Franga
When you get to the
Einasleigh river crossing there is good spots on either side of the river to
camp. Plenty of red claw.
Copperfield gorge has good fishing.
The gem fields about 40km out of mt surprise, has a dedicated
camping area, not sure of cost if any, you can get a fossicking licence here, there is good spots along the
savannah way up to
Chillagoe as
well. We will be doing that road shortly.

While in the area you should not miss the Cobold Gorge. While not a '
free camp' situation and you must take the guided tour to actually see
the gorge it is one of the wonders of the area. It's about 30km from
Forsayth and the road can be bad at times.
