thinking of going to the pinnacles from Perth and was wondering if anyone knows if its OK to take an off road caravan the back way which saves about 80 to 90 KM?

why would you?
wouldn't the rough limestone tracks slow you down and put the van thru unnecessary punishment?

The back track from Wedge Island to the Pinnacles/Cervantes is a combination of beach sand tracks and very rough limestone for extensive periods. I dread taking my cruiser on it so there is no way I would do it with a van offroad or not. I lived at Wedge for several years and know the area quite well. 38 km from Lancelin to Wedge and about the same from Wedge to Cervantes

Don't do it!

It can be a "challenging" trip, especially if you misread the tide chart and there is an extra high tide.
There is no point in washing the entire vehicle in sea water or bogging it in seaweed covered sand. It takes bl**dy hours to get all the sand from all the corners of the vehicle.

Believe Me... I made that mistake once, never again.

Funny that, I've been up there twice and from Lancelin followed coastal tracks from potholed sand to limestone goat tracks all the way to the pinnacles. Never once did I have to drive on the beach, just where does one detour for the beach stint? Is that a recent track as I have not been up there for a few years now?

Hello - there is a section that can be driven along the beach from Wedge Island north. Not sure of the distance maybe 8km at most. The beach then narrows and you have to go inland again.

Cheers

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

Klaus,
The main track out of Lancelin through the dunes, keep on this for about 10-12km there is a well worn left turn off the main track and over a small hill. This leads to the beach (approx 10km)via a place called Narrow Neck. The beach is usually great in summer but is mostly difficult during winter, it is still passable, the locals use it most days by watching the tide.
There have been many vehicles lost in the ocean here over the years.if you stick to summer it is a fantastic run all the way to Wedge Island and further north until you must leave the beach in order to continue to Cervantes and the Pinnacles

Years ago we tried going south from the Pinnacles, in a Cruiser - no trailer - took us half a day slithering up and down sand hills to get to beach section, then not knowing the tides, we went back to Cervantes to go back out to the Highway and back to Perth much quicker. The guy at the servo at Cervantes said we would have got through to Lancelin, but it would have taken us all bl--dy day.

Hi Slush - i don't think it will be much different to when we tried it - talk about a "loooooong-cut" - the Highway certainly is the short way home.

Sure is Ross; in fact with a van it would be no way! We went up and down some steep sand hills - a bit like one way traffic - up one way up, then down another because no way would you get anything up through loose sand on at least one of the slopes.

Apart from what you have been told on the posts,I hope you arn't too d issapointed when you get to see the pinnacles as I think it is the most overated tourist attraction in Australia. Not many people go back for a second look.

I disagree. I've been up there a number of times for a day trip.

Pinnacles - Stromatalites in Lake Thetis - late lunch in Cervantes pub. All good.

Fair call....I dont have any plans of rushing back to see it again but I enjoyed the first viewing.

As to whether its overated tourist attraction...well to me its more the area. You get to see the landscape, a fascinating formation and an awesome coastline.

I guess if you drove flat out along the highway to the pinnacles, spun around the loop and back on the highway to Perth...then it would be overated...pretty sad way to experience Aust, dont you think?

Im with Stephen...slow down and enjoy it!

My 2c Matt.

Last time I went up , I had a leisurely drive up there leaving Perth early ,had a look around the Pinnacles, nice swim on the beaches of Jurien ,booked into the Jurien pub , had a meal there and got on the booze with the locals.
Come home the next day with hangover and a good time time under my belt;)

Sorry Rambler I think you are wrong

Any one who's ever been at the Pinnacles at sunrise, midday, sunset and, perhaps most spectacular of all, Full moon will never consider it over rated.

It's a place of great beauty and ,unless the hoons are racing round, a place of great serenity

IMHO well worth visit whenever I'm in the area.
