Well we have been thinking about it for a while, now it is time for the planning.
We are leaving end of July/ early August to travel the Great Central Rd through to the Alice, on to the Tanami and then the
Gibb River Road, up to
Kalumburu and down to
Broome and home, pick up the Caravan and head back up to
Shark Bay and then don't know where. However I have heard of a church, probably a mission church, where the alter is built or covered with shells, now for some unknown reason I have a fascination with old churches and as we are up that way would love to see it.
I'm sure there is someone on this site (if not most of you) who have seen it, could you give me some idea as to exactly where it is and the best way to get there and any other sites to see around it. I have a feeling it is at
Beagle Bay Mission but I looked in the trek notes but didn't come up with anything about the church (maybe I didn't search right)
Thanks in advance
Deanna

Deanna, I haven't been there, but you're right about it being at
Beagle Bay - it is
well documented in travel info. It is on my wish list (as is everywhere else you're about to visit). Not recommended to take caravans though, due to narrow road i understand.

Hi Motherhen, it's been on my wish list for a while too, we are not taking the caravan on that trip, that is why we are coming back to
Perth to pick it up and take it back up to
Shark Bay, those roads are definitely not caravan roads.
Thanks for the link, will pull it up.
Cheers
Deanna

Deanna, we will take the caravan (with day trips for totally un-caravan friendly roads). I thought your caravan looked like it could tour in the outback. Will you tent or what?

Hi Motherhen, we are going with friends who are tenting so that's what we will be doing too.
Our caravan is not an off-roader but we have taken it on gravel roads, our first trip with it was up through the Murchison and apart from dust getting in it, it travelled fine, we hope we have the dust thing fixed now!!!! We haven't been using the van much apart from a couple trips up to
Shark Bay,
Coral Bay and through Karajini, also we go down to
Albany quite a bit but in the past couple of years we seem to be heading out the back blocks.
Cheers

Gday Deanna
Be sure to do the church and museum tour at
Kalumburu - although I'm not that much of a history buff, and don't have much interest in churches, I found it really good, and Father Anskar is quite a character and very knowlegeable.....we spent as little time as possible in
Kalumburu itself, not really a place to spend leasure time in my book, but our time at honneymoon bay was excellent, and would love to go back soon.....maybe next year!
I would also reccommend reading any of father Sanz's books before you go. I have just read 'metamorphisis of a race', and just started reading 'memoirs of a spanish monk'. Very interesting reading (must be, I've read very few books since leaving school)
Enjoy the trip, and drop us a line if you are in KNX
Cheers Andrew

Mate excellent trip planned. The road up the
Dampier Peninsular is a totally bleep e road with corrugations that would hide a mini minor. 1st 84k of dirt took us 2 hours in May last year. Couple of off-road Jayco campers ended yup getting
suspension repairs at Leveque when we were there also. Tent it and no probs.
