Perth Beach 4wd access - My Impressions from a brief tourists point of view.

Vowed I'd never go back to Perth in summer, so it should have been with relief that our recent 4 day stay began in march.
It was a lovely 22 degree Melbourne day when we left, however on approach
to perth the pilot said it would be 42 and getting warmer for our 4 day stay.

Turned out that it was a record march heatwave with every day over 42
and it was to hot to even be on the beach.

We decided to drive as close to coast as we could north from Perth in an attempt
to find first real beach 4wd access point from Perth.

My memory was that it was at Yanchep, but this place had changed massively
in last 10 years and was now either wall to wall suburbs or suburbs in the making
with lots of "No access $1000 dollar" fine signs.

Got outta there as quick as we could, proceeding along the coast to Two Rocks.

Again no real access, except we found a short unmarked track just south of the marina.

Would have loved to check it out more throughly however it smelt so bad
near the main rock that my wife wouldn't get out of the car so off we
went again.
We only had the "QPA" road map book which was ok but at a 1:250,000 scale
and there was no real detail.

Another hour or two later we arrived at Moore river area at Guilderton
and a very pretty little inlet it was to.
Had a lovely sandbar preventing access to the sea, and a "No vehicle on beach" sign.
However just on north side of town near a lighthouse we saw a sign that made the whole drive worth while.
It read "Shared Beach access " and had picture of car and people
but strangely added "No Trail Bikes".

A lovely set of wheel tracks meandered north along the beach and out of sight.
Don't see much of this in Vic.

Note - From Moore river lookout we noticed wheel tracks south of the inlet and imagine that there are back roads to coast south of Guilderton.

There are probably lots of holes in this little tourist level report
and it would be great if some west aussies could fill in the gaps.

Mate you drove straight past Wilbinga. Its between Yanchep and Guilderton and there is beach access, though some areas have been closed.

Also there is the dunes at Lancelin and the beach run from Lancelin to Wedge Island up to Cervantees ( a good day trip).

Also heading down south along the southern coast line there are many places to drive along vast and empty beaches.

A quick post before you left might have provided you with some good advice as to areas and reference books, such as 4WD Days Out Of Perth etc.

Hi Dave

Controversial subject - but recently did something I never thought I would do in Vic and that was to drag a bogged falcon out of the sand at "Sandy point" when he got to close to the sea in support of a wind surfer.

As Karl said south of Moore River is Wilbinga and most of the tracks that run off the left hand side of the main road from about the pine plantations northwards run to wards the beach. You can get up the beach as far as the river mouth but now further. I am yet to see how north you can go inland but i doubt if you can get to the river.

If you go north from the town you can follow either the beach or take the track past the lighthouse and you can travel up to the next smaller town called seabird where there is a little tavern.

Thre is heaps to do around Guilderton though, if you go up river there is an area for watersports (not Skiing) sandboarding and the whole river is good for fishing.

Limited access to the beaches is the price we have to pay to have the best metropolitan beaches in Australia. :)

And we have no shadows on the beach at sunset either!!!!

Looking for adventure.
In whatever comes our way.

Robin,
Sorry to hear that you missed the Trek Notes on ExplorOz for the WA Coast - including Wilbinga, as mentioned by others above, also the Lancelin - Cervantes run (called Wedge Island as it goes via Wedge Island, a very unique settlement) and others. We also stock an excellent range of maps. Perhaps next time we can help you plan your trip better!

Hi Michelle

Hope the next time I have the luxury of organizing something myself, but this wasn't really a tourist holiday and I just made the most of time available.

Thinking 2 hours ahead , I grabbed a road angel navigator out of my wifes car (melbourne) and chucked it in the baggage.

At perth airport it got me quickly to the first destination in forrestfield , and then I set it for Toddjay. Well it took us up the great eastern highway towards Northam
instead of the Toddjay road which was only a km north.

It got us to the destination by deviating 20km from best main road course.

Then it packed up and wopuld not reset - just printed speed and an 8 position compass heading on the screen.

Avis supply a terrible street directory (Gregory's) and it was a real battle getting around, with much outer stuff beyond its reach .

Might seem odd but I know the stars pretty well and had to use them once or twice for basic night timeheadings, before I got a loan of QPA W.A. map book.

Oh you poor thing - that sounds simply terrible! Please when you come back to Perth, there's lots of us here that can steer you in the right direction (that's if this experience hasn't put you off too much).
