Hi all,
I've had some Graunches & Clunks in the front end of our 'Cart Sprung' 75series Troopy. We narrowed the Graunches down to sway bar bushes- and these have now been replaced with Nolathane. Also did the spring shackle bushes with Nolathane.
After speaking with a few Troopy Drovers- the Clunk is just something to live with !! However, I thought some investigation might reveal the culprit. In this case- I found the two lateral steering rods are very close at the L/H/S. Under some conditions (like rocking the steering, speed humps, etc)- the upper rod rotates forward & aft making contact with the lower arm at the L/H/S making the Clunking noise.
A check this morning with my local front end expert (Truck Align-Narellan) gave a clean report on all the components- and did a bit of adjustment on the upper rod. This has reduced (but not completely eliminated) the Clunk.

Other Troopy people may be interested.

This clunk is reported often by lots of Troopy owners.

It can also be the rear leaf springs (Slippage??) making the clunk and is quite often mistaken as coming from the front.
The Yahoo Troopy Owners Group has had this come up as a regular topic.

Hi John
(As you can see by my pic- I got the 'high lights' mounted)...
Actually put the Troopy over the pit- and it was very obvious- to duplicate the clunk and see where and how it was happening..

Lights look good, pleased to help.

I have yet to finish the outfitting of my new 2006 RV78TD and will fit 4 Light Force 170's across the top on this one.
Ya never have to much light in my book :-)

I see from your response below that you looked at the rear leafs and lubricating didn't help so bang goes my theory so I will just shut up and go fit my lights :-) LOL.

Cheers

Signman

Do yourself a favour and try this very inexpensive experiment.

(1) Purchase a spray pack of LANOTEC

(2) Thoroughly spray/'hose' the spring packs out, both back and front.

(3) wait awhile ( Over/nite if you can).

(4) Then take it for a drive.

(5) Report the feedback to the Forum.

Yup- actually did that exercise (from recommendation) a few weeks ago. Used 1/2 can of a product called OZSPRAY Liquid Lanolin. Even went to the extend of jacking vehicle up to take weight of leafs for better penetration.

Damn!

Lanotec spray in the packs and give the pins and shackels a squirt of grease and the noise/s goes away for a while on my Troopy.

I like your above light setup

Steering Damper ....well yes if the rubber bushes are old, worn and flattened but the main cause is that mentioned by you ....:the upper rod rotates forward & aft making contact with the lower arm at the L/H/S making the Clunking noise. /
I have spent hours and hours doing a CD version of the two work manuals for the Landcruiser,Gregory's and the Haynes all on 1 CD and it works like a webpage complete with active Indexes It takes up 197 MB (207,032,320 bytes) has 3226 files in 57 folders , If I had enough room in a website I would have it on the internet but I only have access to 20mb , Then I guess someone would be on about copyright

It will be your front leaves moving around, you'll find the straps that hold the pack together have opened up over the years, clamp them back in and weld a small strap across the gap in the strap to hold it. guaranteed!!

Hi you may find it is worse after driving in the rain.
As for the noise, How do you hear it over the rattles and squeeks? LOL
If there are no rattles and squeeks, get a louder stereo with a big sub woofer then you can go doof doof doof clunk doof doof.... and you probably wont notice.
If you think the steering is loud just wait for the firewall body mounts to start knocking.

Yep, I agree.

In the dry no noise, but when it rains, clunk, clunk clunk.!

Hi Signman ................

All the above !!

Have just had the same problem on my '92 Model 75 Troopy.

Alledgedly worn bushes, loose and rusted springs [mainly rear, from yonks of dinghy salt water launches and retrieves,] age shall not weary them etc.[much!] and general wear and tear. Originally sounded like coming from the front also.

Have now replaced all springs with OME's, plus all new shackles/bushes and now greasable shackle pins! Together with all U-bolts and the unbelievably expensive genuine TOY spring/U-bolt plates @ near $100 each!
My nuts were nearly eaten away by corrosion and stone damage, worn down to almost circlip status ........... [rather, the Troopy's nuts, I mean!]

Almost $2.5K .............. and the clunks are even worse.....!!!

Further investigation discovered that the NEW replacement springs had been dropped/thrown from a truck [before they got to my mechanic] and had suffered severe mis-alignment ........... iffen I remember correctly, the mechanic said 'the steel sleeves that grip the shackle bushes had been badly distorted and allowed the springs to shift on the pins. Does that sound right ?
The careless trucky chappy is now 'between engagements' ...........and a new set is being shipped up, under warranty, of course.
All this was after the mechanic had the vehicle up on his hydraulic lift to take the load off the springs whilst he liberally greased between every leaf, even though they had the nylon/teflon inserts.

Couldn't believe my ears when I heard the clunks and groans back again.

And you wouldn't believe how much gold I have to find to pay for all this.......
See thread 43205 re COEN : ..... that's the area where I have to go to get it !!
Will be at least 3 - 4 months before any real prospecting is accessible.
BUMMER all round .........
