Mittagong to Wombeyan - suitable for trailers?

We are heading off to Wombeyan caves for the weekend - been about 15 years since I was last there! I remember that the road from Mittagong is narrow and winding, and also note that some maps mark it as unsuitable for caravans.

I will be towing our Jayco Hawk camper trailer with our 100s and from what I remember I don't think we will have a problem - anybody care to throw in their two cents worth??

Thanks, Carl

No Probs.- gets a bit windy West of the Tunnel- just watch for 'gooses' (or is that geese) coming the other way. Road condition is good overall.

It's only a l'ill tunnel- about 1/2 way between Mittagong & the Wollondilly River- before the windey part of the road on the Western Side...(maybe you had your eyes closed)...
BTW Vince- what was your issue on VKS on Sat. arvo- I note you were mentioned on the log??

We were out the back of the Jenolan forest & I thought it would be a good Idea to get in some practice on the HF. Tried the Adelaide sked but the were getting very poor feed from me. The operator was worried that I may be in trouble and went to great lengths to try & make contact. I was able to get the message across that all was OK my end and Call via land line to thank VKS for their efforts when we got out of the bush.
I was a bit shy about the trouble I had caused, but it is great to see the effort & concern from the system.
The next practice session will be from a more favourable site, not in the bottom of a canyon.

You will have no problems at all , I think it would have been around 1976 I went that way from Mittagong to Goulbourn in a Mazda 4100 4 tonne truck with a 27 ft two car trailer , all up about 54 ft , Oh yeh I had a few tight corners but I got it through, lmao someone will surely ask why , I needed to bypass Marulen Checking Station .

Those were the days Doug.

I remeber in my mid teens riding the old deadly treadly down that road. I was having a great time until I rounded a corner on the wrong side of the road to be met by an oncoming Kenie complete with trailer. Suspect his reason for being there was the same as yours.

It was a good ride. Some scary moments along the way but have I got some stories to tell from that afternoon of madness/fun. My original trip was part of a week long adventure. That part of it was so good that we went back a couple of years later with another bunch of kids just ot do that hill.

Road TAX was the big issue then and came to a head with the Razorback Blockade, I was in the one at Kalkallo just north of Melbourne

Doug - that would have been one serious detour! I guess it must have been worth it to add quite a few hours to your trip like that!

For me Road Tax was not all that important , I had another reason , and what Transport Inspectors don't know they don't worry about.

Absolutely no problems for a competent driver.

I used to drive a 1418 Mercedes Prime Mover with trailer in and out of there. We were hauling crushed marble (calcite) out o0f the Wombeyan Marble Quarries.

Yes narrow & winding and a tad rough describes it but your only real problem is the moronic revheads coming up the hill driving as if they are in the Paris Dakar rally...
Not a road that I would tow the gin palace over though...

Carl & Kaz,

I did the trip on the Australia Day weekend just passed. Was towing my Kimberly Karavan. Stayed at Wollondilly River Station down at the bottom of the road on the river. Great bush camping and cheap.

Went for a day trip to the caves. You can get a regular caravan in from the Goulburn side no worries.

Hawk will be no worries down this road. One of our party had a similar camper.

Just take it easy. Leave in second if an auto. Watch for dust from those coming up.

As stated previously some people go a tad too fast for the conditions.

Cheers
Garth

On the topic of this road, can a regular car get through it taralga - mittagong?
I've seen the turn off many times on my way through to Oberon and off the Hume, but have never ventured through there.

Mittagong to Taralga, to Oberon, to Bathurst, to Goulburn or whatever.

No problems at all, you just might be surprised at the amount of traffic on the road.
