I have owned an early 100 series live axle front end for a couple of months now. Occasionally I get a shimmer-wobble coming through the front end at about 65 km/hr on a straight bitumen road. It lasts for a few seconds and then disappears. The vehicle is a gxl auto diesel which I put aftermarket turbo on. I am happy in every respect with the vehicle but this light wobble which comes and goes at about the speed described is a mystery. Does anyone have any clues or experienced a similar problem? The vehicle has done 160k and the present tyres are getting down but still have an even tread. Possible causes appreciated!

Hey Geoff
I have the same car in all aspects by the sound of it, does yours get hot at highway speeds???
Anyway that shimmer prob, I think i get the same thing I thought it was cause I have really lumpy cooper rubber underneath, maybe it could be a thing with the bushes in the front end.

Hey Fishaholic
I have installed safari Turbo (no intercooler) and no problem with temp. I towed 1.t boat up Gillies range here in NQ. Temp never moved.
I have different rubber on wheels.

Hi Mayesy

Do the basics and then try it again.

1) Tire pressures
2) Balance
3) Alignment
4) Wheelbearings

Have the alignment shop check the bushes.

I know my 100 series likes the tailshafts to be greased every 3000 km otherwise it gets a slopy thud in the driveline.

Regards

Derek.

I will follow advice particularly on drive train. Is yours an auto?

Mate I would think that it is the tyres. The quickest (free) test is to swap tyres front to back and see if it gets worse or goes away. If it goes away, get the set balanced, put the wobbly ones back on the front, if it is ok then good. If not go for a wheel alignment, if no different change your steering damper. It wouldn't be bushes.
Been thru all this B4 in the 80 series.

Sounds very much like a wheel balance

You will find that it is the wheel alignment is out, with most other problems such as tyres or balance you will find that the shimmer gets worse with speed but if find it only comes in at a certain speed then stops as you keep accelerating or slowing down then it will be wheel alignment.

Hi Chris,

You may be right about the alignment but these are the same symptoms of a tyre balance problem.
