Hi Dave
Good products
I have Garmin 3 , and it has australia base map whereas garmin 11 does not.
They are years old now. The 3 has ability to save multiple tracks and I like this feature as I keep a large library of my own stuff.
While there are a couple of GPS that beat it now , none come close in value for money , if you wish to do some of your own thing.
Mines has lost a couple of rows of LCD elements ,
check this before you buy second hand.
I can read it in sunlight whereas can't read my road angel navigator or magellan color

Hi Dave.
I have a 2 plus. It is a basic unit - no maps but works very
well. I use Oziexplorer to make up & arrange way points. Have also used it with the lap top for a moving map display.
I think that the 3 has some limited mapping capacity.
They can have the display set either horizontally (the unit will sit on a flat surface) or vertically (Better suited for hand held use)
Way points - 500. May be a bit limited.
Tracks - 1 only. I find this a nuisance. 1024 track points per track - easy to fill up in a days drive.
Routes - limited to 30 way points per route. Definitely need more. 20 routes available.
Way point names limited to 6 Characters - a bit like early DOS / Windows, 7 c
character file names.
Make sure that the inbuilt memory battery is OK and / or the GPS is an Australian model. A replacement battery cost me about $60.00 installed as
mine turned out to be a US model.
Conclusion. A good and solid GPS. Basic features as listed above are a bit on the light side. I use
mine in conjunction with a PDA with a SIRF111 compact flash GPS. This is to give a moving map display. For routes etc I still use the Garmin.
Hope that this helps, Tony

I had a Garmin II+ for years. It was a good unit for the price I paid. They are an old unit now and I paid a lot less than $250 when I got
mine.
Mine came with an external antenna, etc. I would therefore suggest that $250 is overpriced.
Mine finally spat the dummy and I bought a HP iPaq PDA GPS to replace it. It cost a little over $700. I was happy with the Garmin until it spat the dummy.
I would suggest that you spend a little more and purchase a new GPS. As with most tech products there have been improvements in GPS over the years.

if you are after a basic gps then a new Etrex for around $150 off ebay would be better value. those prices are far too much for 2nd hand (even new 2nd hand) GPS

i still use my Garmin III.
they are small enough to be handheld and can be mounted.
several tracks can be saved on the III.
it is has been a great unit linked to an external antenae.
they are quite a few years old and no longer available/supported.
you cannot upload maps onto it and the base maps leave a lot to be desired.
i suggest that you take your hard-earned and buy a new unit.
