Awest,

The High Country is a bit of a unknown at the moment. With the fires going through the area a lot has been destroyed. Track are still closed but should all be opened by the time that you want to go there.

Have a look here Site Link

There is so much to see you will have to pick a area and go there. It would be impossible to see it all.

I am going down there in the next few weeks so I will have a better idea what the place is like.

Awest,
If you are partial to wine, olives and cheese then Milawa is a must. It is SE of Wangaratta. Bright is very picturesque and Hotham is worth visiting in summer as well. When leaving, it is worthwhile going Hotham, Dinner Plain, Omeo and then northwards up the C545 to Corryong. From there you can cut across the Kosciuszko NP by any of several routes. Tumut to Canberra via the Brindabella range is interesting.
Hope this helps.

Hi Awest

I'd try crossing the Murray from NSW at Tom Groggin - short trip up to highest driving point in Aust. (Mt Pinnabar) - wander down to Omeo and across to Dargo via Haunted stream track (lots of mines - 45 short river crossings - might be just puddles by then) .

From Dargo spend couple of days at Talbotville (do Billy goat bluff , day trip and Blue Rag day trip) - then up to Wonnagatta via Cythia - leaving via Hernes up to high plains and heading north via Bluff stopping at Sheepyard flat then on to Mansfield to position yourself for trip home.

About 7 days with plenty of side tracks to fill in the couple of spare days as you choose.

Whole thing covered by Rooftop series of maps www.feathertopmapping.biz

Must see??????? ............ Need a bit more info........
What do you like to do Westy? Are you after extreme offroad or a Sunday drive? What car do you have? Do you look for history (huts & mining sites) Are you towing a camper? Are you into wine drinking, festivals & eating out? Camping or motel? 10 days is very little in Victoria & although everything is relitively close you may be better to see one area well rather than gallop all over the state trying to see everything.
Cheers Craig...............

Thanks Craig. I don't think the word extreme suits me but my patrol ute with diff locks is pretty capable. I normally do the cape, gulf or canning so you can see i don't like motels. Yes history and some of the more interesting tracks is what i had in mind, but i have only limited time in the area[10 days] plus 2days each way to home. Nice camp sites would be good plus great pubs info[as long as they sell xxxx], only joking.I swag it or camp in the back of the ute.

Some worth while spots to see........Mt Pinnabar. Snowy river/Deddick trail. Haunted stream & Cassilis historic area. Pinnacles lookout via Billy Goat track. The Sentinals. Caledonia river, Butcher Country. Blue Rag Range. Mt Murray/Mt Selwyn. Dargo Pub. Grant historic area. Crooked river. Cynthia range to Wonnangatta. Lake Cobbler. Mt Stirling & associated cattlemen huts. King Billy track/view point. Mitchell station. Mt Terrible. Woods Point pub to Walhala. (challenging tracks in area)
These are just a starting list and as mentioned before although Victoria is compact compared to other states you certainly wont get around all that in 10 days. Options are to do the tracks from the Murray accross as far as Wonnangatta or Start around Dargo & head over towards Mansfield & Woods Point or do the bit in the middle.
If you like short walks, Mt Bogong, Mt Feathertop, Lake Tali Karng, Mt Buffalo are excellent although mostly a little black at the moment.
I wont list great camp sites for fear of overcowding them but there are heaps of excellent free camping sites along the majority of Victoria's High country rivers & you just pull up when you need to. Alternatively pull up above the snow line (1400m) & it will be 10+ degrees cooler than down in the valleys.
The best maps of the High Country for 4x4 touring are the Rooftop series although not yet available down the Murray river end. They show all the best camp sites, historic areas, view points with some handy notes on each area.
Tracks effected by the fires should almost all be open by Feb 08.
Any specific info on an area just slip in another post.
Cheers Craig....................
