Hi all...we are two kiwis in Perth planning to drive to Port Douglas.
Firstly, has anyone any experience of long distance towing with a V6 Camry?
\We have a 15 ft pop top and would love some idea of fuel consumption at 90km taking it easy etc...as we are in no hurry.
Secondly...is the Gibb river in late may/early June a no no for a car and caravan...
Thirdly..the Roper highway...is it Ok for a car and caravan.
We are experienced drivers...ex members of 4WD clubs..but do not have the budget to buy a Fourby for this trip. We have heaps of time and do not need to hurry.
Cheers Gerard and Anne

Hi Gerard and Anne....Firstly i havent experienced long distance towing with a v6 camry , but dont see any probs with that ...Secondly i would not even attempt the GRR with the setup you are using , the corrugations alone would shake your vehicle and poptop to pieces.......Thirdly i travel the Roper highway every year with my Patrol and a 16ft poptop van with no probs , bitumen just about all the way apart from the last 30 odd klms wich is usually pretty good, as long as you take it easy i cant see any probs , just remember that the bitumen is only one car wide and when pasing other vehicles you have to move to the side of the road , some places the drop off is very steep.......cheers .......Dave

sorry , should have said the last 30ks to Roper Bar is dirt , if you intend on proceeding past Roper Bar , the road becomes much the same as the GRR

Not a good idea to take a Camry on the Gibb River Road nor a caravan

Roper Highway is tarred strip road for about 180km plus. After that also not a good idea to take Camry or van on gravel sections.

My reason for saying this is that you will travel along these roads with ordinary road tyres and a low slung car and a flimsy caravan. On the gravel roads they are all likely to be shaken apart.

Cheers

thanks guys...OK..we'll delete our hopes doing the Gibbs River, but am tempted to quietly do the Roper Highway...
What I am tempted to do is buy an old Patrol or cruiser and spend $3000 on tidying it up and getting off road a wee bit..butv nothing major...or toooooo way out.
Cheers

Thats a better idea.

Old Cruiser or Patrol could cost under $5,000 and you may still find one in good condition. Buy a diesel. They go forever.

If you went with the second option of getting an older 4WD then you could always leave the van at derby of kununurra and just take the car and tent along the Gibb River Road ..

We regularly did the old Nullabor (Pre Sealing) in various non 4wd vehicles (HR Wagon), you just had to drive to the conditions, not 70 mph everywhere. I have travelled the Gibb a couple of time recently (4x4) and it was no worse than the Nullabor. We are getting precious aren't we.

I agree all the dirt roads on the EP were far worse than the GRR and we managed them no problems in 2wds
