Hi All,
I've recently bought an older caravan (Viscount Grand Tourer Poptop), used it a few times and found the
water tastes yuck even though I drained and flushed the tank before use . I have drained and flushed the tank a few times since but still get an "off" taste in the
water. (Hasn't made anyone ill but would like to play safe)
Is there a product or products out there that will ensure clean safe
water. I have considered flushing with a bleach (like White King) but am unsure of what ratio to use for this purpose.
Any advice before I buy a new tank?
Thanks
Disco

You can buy tank clean from CAMEC or most caravan parts
places, I believe the main ingredient may be bicarb soda ?
Oh yeah .. Bias boating and whitworths stock it too I think.

Hi Disco Driver
I would try some liquid sodium hypochlorite (chlorine). I am unsure of ratio but guesstimate maybe a quarter of a cup added to bucket of
water. Pour it into tank then fill rest of tank to the with fresh
water. Drain the tank and let it stand empty for day or two allowing the chlorine smell to clear. Top it with fresh
water and see how it goes. If there is only a slight taste of chlorine to the
water, it should be ok.
(certainly better than an "off" smell) If taste/smell too strong then maybe tank would need to flushed out a couple of times.
Cheers

You could try filling the Tank with
water and adding a litre of Vinegar.
Tow the Van around
the block a couple of time then flush the Tank out.
It worked for me.

If your using a near new garden hose to fill it you will get an ant type taste in the
water , I have a small
water filter fitted inline between the tap and the Van, [ i am stationary but can be removed in same time it takes to roll up hose ] It is
bore water where I am and not too bad for drinking but this filter just makes it taste a little better, I got it from Bunnings H/W and the inner filter is for taste only,If the issue was dirth
water then all one does is change the inner filter,
On the other habd if the Tank is old and full of ancient mud, dead ants, and fungus then I would consider fitting a new one, most Caravan sales points will guide you in the right direction

Hi disco driver,
We use a product sold at caravan shops called "tank clean". Basically it must be a bleach based product (smells like it anyway). We fill the tank with
water and the tank clean leave it for the advised amount of time and then drain the tank. We pump the solution up through the taps to flush the lines as
well. We then rinse several times before using. We do this after every winter when the van hasnt been used for 6 months or so.
Hope this helps!

You could also put in a bottle of "Miltons" baby bottle cleaner, refill and let it sit. You will have to flush it a couple of times to get rid of the aftertaste but it works fine. I use it on my camelbak occasionally to keep the bugs at bay.

Hi Disco.
Any
water tank even hoses used to fill fresh
water tanks up should be super-chlorinated at a concentration of 50 ppm for a period of not less than 4 hours and then completely flushed out every 12 months.
Cheers
