We have a 92 petrol/gas GQ (Maverick actually) carby model. Its a great solid bus and still going strong with 260,000 on the clock.
Does anyone have any suggestions on if it is possible to get a bit more power out of the old girl? We tow our caravan with it and we have to slow to a snail pace going up
hill. Have done a search for 'GQ Power' and read a couple of comments about extractors and exhausts. Is this the way to go or are there other things that may help? Seems like a lot of money to spend if we arent going to gain much. Seem to recall years ago everyone talked about putting 'holley carbies' on their cars? Is some sort of different carby an option? Sorry if these are dumb questions but I readily admit Im no mechanic!
So any ideas or are we trying to 'get 400ml out of our 375ml can of beer' ????

Hi,
I have a really good suggestion that I can vouch will definately increase your power output, have a look at my rig
pic for a hint, unfortunately it may be a little more than you are looking at spending I think :-))
Stick to the original carby and get it tuned by someone who knows what they are doing, let people here know your approximate location ie. sth
Melbourne, and some here should lead you to the right people.
Other than that I can vouch for a set of extractors and a free flowing exhaust, should be around the $240 mark for extractors and $80 odd for the rest and will definately increase your bottom end torque and let your motor spin more easily/freely throughout the rev range.
Start with that and see how you feel then, bit hard to put a dollar value on anything beyond that as the chase for horsepower is a bottomless $$ pit.

Definately stick with the original carby since a replacement such as a holley won't work very
well on steep off-road stuff, and if you use a 350 you will hate the flatspots as
well. You do have the option to use gas off road, thus eliminating the problem caused by carbies not designed for off-road, but you'll likely just end up using more fuel, and probably you will have more difficulty tuning the gas side as
well.
Due to dual fuel tuning compromise, you have less power on petrol than normal, and gas will not produce as much power as petrol only.
You could possibly have it tuned to run properly on gas by having the distributor altered to suit gas advance curves, but then it would run really bad on petrol, or you could tune it properly for petrol only which means it would run very bad on gas.
You could fit a V8 Chev (petrol) fairly cheaply, which would give you heaps of grunt.

Turbo or supercharger. Can be done cheapish if your handy with tools. under $2000..
kid on OL got 195hp out of his, but did it cheap, and is now suffering.
Powr never comes cheap.. but do it right do it once.
Extractors and pipe are $1000 all up, and gain you .01% of power.. more noise than power.

As some of the guys mentioned before, they have to make a compromise when they tune your car... they gotta get it somewhere in the middle of petrol & gas. heard of ppl taking their carby to a carby fella & getting some oversided jets but in, which certainly made a huge difference. getting the engine to breathe a little better, either with a snorkle, forced induction or extractors, and a good exhaust system all seem to help... another suggestion, maybe run premium once in a while.
but all that considered, depends on what you're after - if you want ballsy power a v8 is definitely the go... however if you wanna do it on the cheap & you're only after an extra 10-20% to help with that caravan, then above might sort you out.
Cheers & more beers,
Ben
