G'day all.New member in SA.Thought I would
check my wheel bearings on the van last week. The Coromal uses anti theft nuts ( pentagon shape ) so you have to use an adapter to remove. Bit tight. To tight. Sheared adapter. Now if I was
well north of
Laverton WA, where I spend a fair amount of time, with a split tyre
and no spare adapter I could have been in a bit of strife. As it was I made up a drive out of a 16mm bolt and managed to get the nuts off ( just ). My fault due to lack off maintainence. Now I will be checking the nuts every year before leaving for the West.

Dave,
For what it is worth, my advice is to take them off and replace them with regular wheel nuts. I had a similar situation although, in my case, I had bought a camper trailer and hadn't been given the adaptor. Too stupid to think about it or realise before the first flat (middle of nowhere). Fortunately I was able to plug the tyre and it got us through until I had a tyre place remove the offending anti theft nuts and replace them.
The tyre place had no problems removing them and it seems to me that a determined thief would be able to as
well. OK for on road stuff, but it is just one more complication you don't need when off the beaten track. Lost adaptor or split as in your case could leave you in trouble balaced against the pssibility of someone knocking your wheels off.
Just my thoughts.
Matt.

Yeh, would agree with Matt, when was the last time someone stole the wheels off a caravan ?? More likely to steal the whole van !!

I have my van serviced by the dealer and the wheel bearings were repacked a few months ago. When the van was new it used to throw grease out from the cap when hot. I mentioned this to the dealer and he used a different grease. I would assume that the original would have been high melting point stuff, but you just never know. There is no grease thrown out since the service.
On the subject of wheel nuts it seems like good advice to me. The security wheel nuts are looking distinctly second hand with most of the chrome having rusted off.
Do you have a recommended source/brand for the replacement? I assume any good wheel
shop would be able to help.

If your wheel bearings are not getting hot, then the cause of grease getting thrown out is sometimes too much grease packed in the hub area !!
I only grease the bearings, NOT the whole area around them ! When you think of it, even if the extra grease is only 2mm away from the bearing, if the bearing is dry, it can't reach out and grab the extra grease, so all that extra grease is doing no good anyway !!!
