Whilst this is not strictly a travel question it is interfering with my ability to access the forum.

I keep getting pop ups telling me my computer is infected and I need to download software to fix it.

Is this fair dinkhum or is it like the bloke who throws horse manure on your carpet so that you'll but a vacuum cleaner from him?

How do I get rid of it?

Jim.

Jim,

you can also download the latest version of Internet Explorer free from Microsoft. The last two versions include pop-up blockers. These won't completely fix the problem but they do help.

Hello Jimbo. I have just had the same problem myself and had to get an expert to fix it. I already had a virus protector, Bit Defender, but apparently the thing causing your problem works in a different way.

Footloose is spot on with his advice but my expert also left me with a free version of a program called Spybot (Search & Destroy). I've been running it and Ad_Aware every few days and the problem has stayed away - but you will be surprised how much other crap is being planted on your PC
Happy hunting, John

I gave the same advice to a friend of mine who trawls the net and happens across some most unsavoury sites. The software fixed his problems, but apparently Ad aware was working all night to do so.

Try Site Link

I was surprised how much extra crap it found over and above the usual programs suggested above. Spoke to my IT bloke who tried it out with similar results .. so much so that he thought it was a con job. To test it he ran in on a new machine and it returned a nil result so even he was impressed.

Cheers

Yeh don't do as it says as it will probably add problems to your computer and offer no way to solve them. Some of the downloads actually contain spyware or other ghoulies. I know for fact that any Window product, Spybot and Ad-aware SE are all safe websites to go to and safe downloads, and they work. You should be able to set your IE or Firefox to not allow popups anyway, but if you have no adware or spyware protection (most anti-virus programs wont cut it) then you are probably infected anyway, especially if you visit unsavoury sites like porn or free downloads/cracks etc.

Hope this helps

Jimbo

I use Kaspersky Internet Security.

It gives you protection against viruses, spyware and has a firewall. One of the computer magazines did there normal write up on all the Anti-virus and Internet Security programs and rated it the best.

Some have recommended AVG and it is very good value for money. It has to be because it was free. I had that before Kaspersky. When I loaded Kaspersky it found over 20 viruses that AVG had not.

I had the same problem a few months ago even though my anti virus was upto date and was also running AdWare software. Following a tip from my son I web surfed and found a programm called XoftSpy It's a dedicated spyware remover. I found I had 100+ infections.
Can't think of web site at moment but just surf for "XoftSpy".
Since using it have had no more spyware problems
Give it a go, you won't be sorry
