This is a hard one eh, I think your on the right track by getting an NRMA check done,He must also realise this car is 17 years old, It's hard for anyone to go much beyond that advice without seeing the car, Personally if I were doing what he is doing I would be looking at a Hyundai Getz or similar just to get him by until he is home permantly , Other than that Barb you must be very proud of him and we should all wish him
well for serving his Country ,
Doug

Barb,
I have a 92 nissan terrano. Also have two friends with a 1988 and a 1994. We've all had these for about 3 years now. None of us have had any major dramas. I've replaced my
water pump and alternator.
They are prone to rusting underneath the rear
seat. So lift up the rear
seat and have a good look. Then look under the vehicle and check for rust in that spot. If it has been sprayed with that black stuff then it was probably done because of rust. Also chack that the fuel pump has been replaced. When australia introduced low solpher diesel, The change from high to low solphur caused the seals in the pump to fail. It should have failed by now though, so it'll probably be done already.
being a
grey import it will be more expensive to get insurance. I only have third party fire and theft and that costs me about $150. Full comprehensive was around $1300. Not really worth it on a $6000 car. Parts are readily available.
Other then that I can't think of any other faults. They're a good little reliable car.
Cheers
R.

thank you for the info i really appreciate it especially about the insurance and
the spot to look for rust and the fact that there has been no real dramas, living in the country there often isnt a great choice in second hand cars. once again thanks

Yep, agree with robak - ask to see whether the
water pump has been replaced - these tend to go around the 150k-200k mark and costs a reasonable amount to fix(approx $500 if I remember correctly).
They are a good car though for the money though and cope off road no problem
Cheers
