Under-body protection from salt

With a trip to N Straddie coming up, i thought it might be wise to give the underside of the old warhorse a spray of oil or whatever they use. Is there anywhere convenient to N Strad to do that or do 4x4 suppliers provide a service along with their accessories workshops or will I have to do it myself?

Advice muchly appreciated.

Steve

I do a bity of beach driving locally and have used underbody paint for protection on the underside.

A good pressure spray with some CMS detergent first then after all is dry spray on the underbody paint.

I have done this every two years and no rust has appeared. Also some deterent in the doors, sills and guards in the form of fish oil or the like wont go astray either.

Have discussed this topic with a few people in the business of doing this for a buck and found that one of the most effective products was ..............
"Lanotech 3000" spend a day spraying this stuff in every nook and cranny under the vehicle and you will be surprised as to how well it works.
The bad side is it cost about $90.00 for a four litre bottle, on the other hand though at least if you spend the time to do it properly you have the peice of mind that you weren't ripped off by paying Mr Bodgey to give the under body two pathetic squirts and sending you on your way minus a hell of a lot more money than $90.00 !

Staun do a product at $79 per litre. The idea is to dilute it to varying degrees, depending on use. The bloke I spoke to said you dilute it at 30 to one. Doesn't seem bad value when you look at it like that. They also do 500ml for $49. So, at that rate you'd be getting15L for just under 50 bucks.

I suppose the question is, how many litres would you use to do the u/neath?

I've been using lanotec for a while instead of WD40 and Innox. excellent product. It even gives off farmyard smells, as it is actually a wool by-product. Enough to send a Kiwi wild with desire (sorry lads)

I'll perhaps give that a go mate. Although a full day sounds a bit excessive. Still, if it does the job......

cheers

actually, John, it is a Defender but surely it would still need some protection for the steel bits?

I was told the other day there is an oil spray bath that covers the whole car just near fraiser. Can anyone confirm if this is true? apparently you go in before the island and then after for a cost of around $10 a pop.

Its at Rainbow beach on the road to Inskip point [ barge to Fraser ] ,, sprays oil under vehicle then on return supposedly washes oil and sand/salt off ,, if you believe that a 2 min underbody spray using high pressure semi recycled "water" gets rid of all the sand and salt go for it , you will only have wasted $10 and forced the sand and salt even further into every nook and cranny.

Alloy, when you're stuck with level 4 water restrictions, meaning no hoses at all at home, the $10 bucks is money well spent. Does a fairly good job but not as good as a pressure washer.

MrBitchi ,yep I know all about the level 4 and we are soon to be on level 5 , point I was trying to make was that the Rainbow wash ON is useful , the wash OFF however does more damage than good.

Yeah I know its not straddie but the same idea. Also spraying oil under your car for 2 mins should give a decent coating, and as for getting it off I would have thought spraying oil again, rarther than water would be the best, or hot water with an emulsifier. In malacoota they used to have a hot high pressure gun.

F4Phantom , point Im trying to make is that the HIGH pressure underbody wash using DIRTY contaminated water to clean the underside AFTER Fraser is a waste of time and $ ,,, only thing it does is force the sand and salt into every crook and cranny ,, being on level 4 , soon to be on level 5 water means no hosing at all , as for a HIGH PRESSURE hot wash ,sorry but to me that sounds like "time to replace all my seals that have/had grease " ,,, only real solution to the underbody sand/salt is a slow LOW pressure flooding with fresh water.

point taken, then I suggest driving into a fresh water river and sitting there for 10 minutes, then drive through at speed to get the water everywhere.

Begs the question, when you see ads and sometimes homevideo of guys driving in the surf, it looks like lots of fun, but salt is being driven at 100kph into the smallest holes, I wonder how long these cars last. I would tend to stay away from driving in salt water.

The underbody sprays at Rainbow beach and noosa north shore, both do NOT spray oil anymore. They got pinged by the EPA for it.

Best thing ive heard for anti rust under body (and inside the panels too) is gear oil!
Get your old gear oil from transfer cases and gearboxes and dilute it with kero and spray it (use a garden sprayer) everywhere!
I have been told you dont use sump oil because its detergent based and will run out. Gear oil will stay put and espeicially if you drive down a dusty road first thing after you apply it.'

Lanolin is great as a rust proofer but on the underbody sand sticks to it and wont wash off except with a steam cleaner. If this doesnt bother you, I'd highly recommend it.
I only use lanolin on internal cavities and under the floor mats - spraying a light oil/kero mix on the exposed underside with a hand sprayer works well. Sand also sticks to this but not to the same extent and is MUCH easier to wash off. Stay away from used engine oils as they contain acids and other corrosion inducing combustion byproducts.
