Which is the best oil filter to use on the 1fz-fe 4.5 petrol Landcruiser engine?
Is it the larger one p/n 15600-41010 or the smaller one (part number escapes me)?
Are there pro's and cons to the larger or smaller one?
Some say that the smaller one gets oil pressure up quicker and on the other hand the larger one holds more for initial startup.

Hi Rob, one is simply a Z9 and I think that the other is a Z145 (without looking). I have had a Z9 on a motor that should have the smaller filter and no probs after 260km when I sold the vehicle. I think the Z9 is around $7 and the smaller one about $8 no not much difference.

Tour Boy,
Thanks for the reply.
The cost isn't of concern to me, I was just wondering if there may be any benefit or detriment in relation to the physical size of the filter. I have asked at Toyota but they weren't of much help.

So a Z9 is interchangeable on a 1FZ-FE is it?

Is it easier to get to? (I need a third wrist to reach the small ones.)

Can you take it out via the top of the motor or do you have to drop it on the ground when changing filters?

Not that I know of, The threads and holes are the same size. Personally I prefer a filter that holds twice as much crap as the other one. I only use genuine on diesels on a long trip if I'm going to run over the 5000km service. Otherwise it is Cooper or ryco for me.

Coventry's sell AC Delco filters for the 4.5's at a good price.

Another tip is to use the air filter from the 4.2 turbo diesel. It's much bigger than the petrol one.

Apparently the correct size depends on the year of manufacture for your vehicle (this is according to the dude at the place I buy mine).

Z418 for 4/96 on (Last 80 series update from memory) Z9 1992- 4/96. However in theory they're the same engine so both can be used. Mine is a 94 and i have used both but now use the small one being z418 as the oil press buildup is much quicker and the bottom end bearing knock is audible for less time each cold start. In theory less bearing and crank wear with quicker oil press buildup.
