Hi all, I've just purchased a new NS Pajero and as the spare tyre is on the back of the car, our existing bike rack doen't clear it. Does anybody know of a towbar extension tongue that will extend the towball out past the spare tyre?
Cheers, Sam.

Sam, I had a similar problem and noticed the Jeep KJ Cherokee (current model I think) towball mount is extra long compared to standard.
I ended up purchasing one of these from Lincorp (Jeep supplier) for $74 brand new, fitted into my Hayman Reese Towbar as per normal.
You can see some pic's of it here:

Not sure if it'll solve your problem but did
mine.

Similar issue on my NM. Just drilled another hole in the tongue so it now has 2 positions. Only use the extended position for the bike rack as I don't want to put too much strain on the tongue when towing.

That definitely seems like the easiest (and cheapest) solution. How close to the end of the tongue did you drill your hole? I presume having the extra hole in there when using the original position for towing will not decrease the strength of the tongue?

About half way between the existing hole and the end was enough for me. No problems with strength.
Need to find someone with a decent drill press to do it for you.

You would be suprised at the stresses generated by a coouple of bikes on one of those racks. Mate of
mine used to work fitting and repairing towbars. the ones with the most damage were not the ones towing huge vans but the Corolla, Pulsar. etc. that only carries bikes on a rack. They often had cracked welds and elongated mounting holes.

Hi there hooked - I have a carrier on an extra long arm, but it isn't much good if you're going off road... just makes your exit angles rather limiting. Remember it is still quite a weight out there cantilevered on the back too.

Thanks Andrew - where'd you get the longer tongue from? I wouldn't be taking the bikes if we were going seriously offroad.

If you're in
Adelaide you can borrow it - it only gets used occasionally.
I needed it to extend out past the kaymar rear wheel carriers.

Another solution we bought which attaches to my Troopy tyre and allows doors to open whilst bikes are mounted.

Sam
I know you don't want to buy anbother thing but in a bike
shop in
Lilydale earlier this week and they had bike racks on HR type square tube and certainly long enough to clear the back wheel on our NM and I think would do the job on an NS.
We are shortly to be in the same boat, swapping the NM for an NS. While we will buy another Paj (cause they are great) I do reckon that Mitsu stuffed up on a number of issues and the back wheel is one.
Apart from the bike carrier we can't fit our axe/shovel carrier and the door will not open quite as far when we have the camper on behind.
I reckon someone will come up with a kit to remove the wheel cover--- hopefully.

G'day Rusty, yeah I'm not too keen on shelling out for another bike rack. The one we have is only 6 months old. I've actually found a guy on ebay who makes longer hitches which should do the trick. He was quoting around $20.00.
I'll be interested to see if I need the lift kit for the spare wheel to allow the boat to be hooked up. The lower spare definitely helps with rear vision but raises a few other problems in the process. Having owned a Mazda Tribute for the last 3 years I'm very excited about the Paj. DID engine is a pearla!
Cheers, Sam.
