Rob,

As far as I know you have not been able to drive across the Jardine for a few years now.

The crossing has been changed so that it is not possible to drive across.

The ferry, although expensive is the only way to go.

With the river full of crocs would you really want to drive it after you walk the river????

Hi Wayne.

Thanks for the update, I have not been up that way for years.
But have walked and driven it a few times. Even helped push a load of motor bikes through it.

Cheers

A friend did the crossing with others last year in a brand spanking Patrol. They all got across but it did sound risky.

Many years ago a mate of mine set off to walk the crossing, he was about 2/3 of the way across when he noticed a shadow in the water, long and dark.

OhhhhDeaaaarrrrr he thinks to himself. Twas a log but apparently he developed a certain reluctance to awim in rivers after that.

By the way, there was a post recently saying the ferry cost had dropped dramatically. Don't know if it was right though.

The post was misleading. The normal cost hasn't been dropped, but "local" vehicles will now cost $11...they must have been free before ?

I saw the dragmarks of a large croc not far from the ferry. He bit a local in two the next year. No way will you get me near the water in that river.

That may be true Signman but when we were on the Cape in 99 we saw 3 and met at least two other people who had seen one each. One of these was a close encounter when the croc took a fish off the guys line at the rivers edge.

What I said earlier about my mate was also true for me, I developed a certain reluctance to swim in the rivers.

Is that a log or a croc...........lets not take the risk.

For as long as I can remember there have been Crocs around the ferry area.

Never seen one at the drive through crossing. But when you walk any river up north. Crocs are always on your mind.
Crocs are on the increase!! Proserpine river in say 1992 had a few Crocs and now you could walk to the other side across there backs.
This is about as far south as you see them. But people see lots of logadiles in the Mary river in Hervey bay

As kids we use to tube and ski off the boats ramp at Thomatis creek at Holloway beach near Cairns. There were a couple of Crocs in there, but they lived up stream a bit. Now you would not stick your big toe in there.

One night years later we were playing touch footy at Aeroglen and up out of the creek wonders this croc, stopped play for a little while.

When living up in Darwin and Jubiru I have never seen so many Crocs. You would have to poke to away with a stick just get your fishing line in the water. That was 94. I could only imagine what there like know. But I think Territorians know how to take care of them on the QT

This would make an interesting post, to Cull or not to Cull.
