More info needed, how have you hooked it up to the tap?
Also, are you using the Coleman accessory inlet water pressure regulator?
You would certainly have to use the inbuilt tap on the front of the unit each time you use it, to activate the gas ignition.

no not using water pressure reg, have it hooked up to tap. turn tap on to feed Coleman h.w.s 6lt/pm thought there may have been a way around this.

will not work with out the addaptor site link
http://www.coleman.com/coleman/images/pdf/2300-511.pdf same principle as an instantanious hot water system needs water pressure regulated with a sensor switch knows when water is flowing through unit ,other wise it would not light without water super heat and blow up. it a safety feature for that and and other reasons Dags

Hi Slush - I had similar thoughts - would be very convenient if it worked.
If the tap is on the inlet side, as soon as there is no water the Coleman safety will cutoff the gas. Like all gas appliances, it then needs manual intervention - eg turn knob to off and start again. This happens in normal operation if there is air in the inlet pipe.
If there is constant (low) water pressure from your van pump, and the tap is only on the outlet (from the Coleman), I think it should cycle - eg cut off when temp too high, then restart when temp falls - eg tap is turned on.
(The thermal cutoff is designed to work in this manner normally, and does just that.)
The fact that the outlet is unrestricted, strongly suggests the design was not intended for this style of operation however.
The risk (of damage to the unit) may be greater than the small convenience factor, so I just lug it into the van, and run it on
the bench top to heat the water in the sink for large wash-ups (eg after roast meals etc)...........................Keith.

It will shutdown if the temp gets too high and then automatically restart once it has dropped but if the water flow stops it will shutdown and not restart. You have to turn it off and back on again if the water flow has stopped.
Just connect your pump up to the coleman mains adapter and turn
the knob on the coleman when you want hot water, it doesn't get much simpler than that. Assuming your pump in the van is a pressure pump that will shut off when you turn the coleman off
