Hi
I was just wondering if any one knows how to get the engine rpm signal to run a aftermarket tacho.
Thanks

I take it your Defender is a diesel.
VDO make an alternator powered tacho.
I actually measures the speed of the alternator, but is calibrated to allow for the "gearing effect" of the pulley ratios.
I fitted a few back years ago when I was involved with VDO in a big way.

Is yours a TDI or TD5 ?
The TDI pickup comes from the 'W' output on your alternator. See
forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=9408
on how to modify your alternator if it doesn't have a "W" terminal.
TD5's pick up their signal from the ECU. Not sure how but google is your friend.

I have a wire coming from the e.c.u. that goes straight to the tacho, that is a 2 inch one that is fitted in the hole of the clock mounting. I will
check the colour of the wire if you wish.

Sorry about the delay it went to my spam box. Under the drivers
seat there are two yellow wires out of a black box that has wabco written on it. (the one nearest to the door)They come out of a connector about in the middle of the box. The front one has a pale purple trace through it and the rear one has a
grey trace. The wire I have used is the one with the purple trace ,the front one.
I have just placed a cable joiner, the type that you squeeze with pliers to join the wires and it goes to the tacho.
The purple trace is hard to see on my wiring, but you should be ok.
