Hi all
I'm planning to drive a Troopy to the UK (container to Singers).
My knowledge about packing the Troopy is basic stuff; leave things I need regularly as easy access (food/water/fridge/shower/toilet/ready-use clothing), keep weight to minimum, keep heavy stuff off roof rack, take 2 spares (1 as tire only on roofrack stuffed with spare hoses, filters & the like). What I don't know is the basic rules of packing a "skinny" Troopy with all the stuff you'd expect for a trip of this duration & complexity.
Any thoughts?
Roy

Have you negotiated a way through Burma yet?

How many of you will there be? What troopy model? 1Hz? You will find people with knowledge of the 1Hz all the way to Western Europe.

Seems like you already know what to do, just bring plenty of spares. A fwe practice runs will sort out the order of packing.

Have you arranged insurance yet? If so then who insured you and what for?

2 people. Hoping to linkup with other travellers as we get closser to leaving, Jan 2008. Model 78 1HZ. Not taking a lot of spares, as you say there should be spares (filters, bushes etc) around. Agred, 1st trial run to Big Desert NW Vic sorted out a few things already. Noy looked at insurance yet. We'll be looking at that soon especially medical. See PostID 43288 for other info.

Back in 97 I planned to do the same. I sourced an ex camel trophy Landrover but on the advise of the dealership selling the vehicle the suggested checking out insurance first. The cheapest quote I could get to cover just the drivers in the event of an accident with no cover for the vehicle or possessions was 6200 pounds.
I also took a long hard look at the guy that wanted to come with me and thought that I wouldn't be able to deal with him for that long so I used cost as an excuse and we head off to Australia taking public land transport. I parted ways in central Iran with this guy and the trip really took off from there.
Many times I wished I was driving because you can't get a bus to stop when you want but occasionally I saw something interesting and got the bus to stop and got off in the middle of nowhere and had to figure out my next move. BUt the upside was meeting a lot more people along the way. Great fun.
So much so that I did the journey in reverse in 2002/3.
You won't regret this. I hope the rules for travelling through China have changed. No idea what the story is now but a few years ago you needed to travel in an approved organised group to get over the border. And this cost $$$$, some people travelling independently were paying US$200 a day. We encountered lots of hassles because we travelled through Tibet, we started off with an organised group to take us over the border into China and the then informed the tour leader that we were not going to show up the next day. We took off on our own. All good fun and we lived to tell the tale.
The most interesting travel night I had was spent in a Libyan prison but that’s another story.
Gook luck and can you please post about insurance, I am itching to do a journey like that again.

Roy,

Trip sounds interesting.

By "Singers" do you mean Singapore? If so, where to after that. I am planning a trip through Europe and Russia with my 79 series.

Have you had a look at Horizons Unlimited web site?.

The site is mainly for motor cycles but there is a place in HUBB in the Horizond Unlimited web site for 4WD'ers. There won't be any advice on packing but loads of other helpful stuff.

Also see

for a trip list as long as your arm, this is a recent trip and is quite helpful with trip notes etc.

Let me know how your plans go.

Chris

Do you know about the heavy cost of the Chinese official guide you will have to employ for each car while in China?
