Hi Tim,
Like any unseal road the conditions vary and depend when a given section was last graded. In general it is a reasonable unsealed road. You do need a couple of permits though.

They are gonna spend $750k on it to fix a few spots. Generally good but a few samndy spots and potholes that sneak p. Keep to around 80 and it is a smooth trip............................... Until you hit the stretc between docker river and the olgas they are hell corragated.
Oh yea you need 2 permits STILL!!!!!!!!!

You need them for the blue lines

There where no roads in this area pre 1970s

Hi Garbutt, I got in there last night, the address is
www.dia.wa.gov.au/land/permits
There is also a place to apply for Interstate permits as well, you will need one from the NT

I have just clicked on the link and it has worked for me. I have had some problems getting into the site by just typing in the address in the address bar however I get in through with the links OK.
Hope that makes some sense
Other than that I can't help you.

Cheers

From what I've read recently on here and Federal Govt sites, you don't need permits if you're just passing through and staying on the road.

If you intend to camp off the road - and well off the road would be advisable - then you'll need a bit of paper,,,,,,,,2 bits apparently.

Flamin' ridiculous,,,,,,,,,,,,but that's what we let 'em do to us,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Anybody read the article by Christopher Pearson in The Australian about Louis Nowra's book, "Bad Dreaming".

Then we ALL might understand why they keep us out of these places,,,,,,,,and pay for the privilege - thank you very much.

When I drove across it back in 2001 I pulled into the cop shop at Yulura and asked about the permits and the copper asked what I was doing. I said getting from north QLD to Perth the quickest. He said "don't worry about it you'll be right". Didn't have any issues...

Hi Tim not sure which way You are going but you do need permits . west to east you probably wont be checked (have done it a couple of times with permits) but from east to west if you havent got a permit it will cost you $25 a head at Uluru to get through. Both permits are done by either internet or phone and nil cost.

Have done this trip several times in several vehicles over several decades.

Check Trek Notes Site Link for all the possible details you will need. Get the permits, do the right thing. Never been checked for them myself, but it saves your anxiety about being stopped and asked for them.

It will be cold at night in June.
Aim to stay at the campsite near Docker River on one night - nice spot
Tighten yer bolts before Docker to Olgas section
Site Link will give you a bit of a look at my trip a couple of years ago.
