Hi all,
Just arrived back from a fishing trip and on the way back on a re fuel stop the engine was making a knocking sound on start up and would go away when you bring the idle up. Stopped in at a Nissan dealer and was told it sounds like the dual mass flywheel needs to be replaced.
Has anyone herd of changing this to a solid flywheel, $ and their experiences.
I live in Melbourne western suburbs.
All info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gimp, I must warn you for the extended response.

Yep, sorry to say its you're 'dual mass' flywheel.
Its common to go on those things even as low as 60 000 Klms, although I've heard of a few other vehicle types with the same problem.

I recently had to change mine and went for the Exedy 'solid-state' version.

Besides the obvious difference (being one piece) I've found an increase in engine vibration (especially when cruising), this can be attributed to the absence of vibration dampening in the solid flywheel. Also when releasing the clutch there is a smaller tolerance as to what speed /rpm you are doing, if your in the wrong range you'll notice it (again due to absence of dampening /slack), you will have to adapt to this.

I stand by my decision though because I wouldnt pay Nissan $2k for another dual mass and knowing that its a consumable /faulty item.

The Exedy Kit (including a new clutch) will set you back about $1800-2000, labor costed me about $740, this will fix the problem for a long time or until you wear your clutch.

I should also mention that unless they remove the engine first (which is ridiculous) they will have rotate the gearbox 180º to separate it from the engine. This process will involve damaging a section of your underbody. Its a dog of a job and I wouldn't try to do it yourself.

By the way, the monkey that did my job left a number of gearbox/engine bolts completely loose (had it done at Dealer) so I would be vigilant as to who you pay to do this job, check that all the looms are re-attached to gearbox /transfer and that they attach the gear lever dust boot with a hose clamp to prevent dust entering your cabin. Never assume the job is done properly...check everything.

Also, if you've got a lower sump leak (as most zd30's do), now's a good time to fix it because you cant get the sump off without first removing the gearbox.
Good luck and my deepest condolences.
