Hi all. I have a 12HT in a 61seris and the other day went to take her for a drive and within 2km (with the window down) i could smell a kind of rubbery / slightly clutchy smell, then as i slowed and rounded a tight bend it got much stronger. i stopped and lifted the bonnet and could see a reasonable amount of smoke commining from the rear end of the motor from around the exhaust manifold area, but could not see exactly where. It is hard also with the amount of air getting blown around the engine bay. I took her home and the next day took off the heat covers from the exhaust manifold but could not find much except a few fresh looking drops of oil on the fire wall and the fact that the furtherest back exhaust manifold heat cover was quite black on the underside. I started her up and could not see any oil leak or smoke, even after running for 20 min, although the smell was still present in the engine bay. I have checked the rocker cover breather hose and turbo hoses but they seem fine. Does anyone have any ideas on this one?????

Hi,
did you change the oil recently? there may be a little bit that spilt and over time has worked its way down to where it can drip onto the manifold. Or the manifold gasket may leak when cold or when cooling down and seal itself when hot. If this is the case you may be able to drive a few kays before the manifold is hot enough to burn the oil and smoke.
Is the black on the heat cover from an exhaust leak or oil?
Might pay to check the nuts and studs on the manifold while you have got the shields off.
Regards

Gidday Tour Boy
No I havnt recently changed oil, its actualy due for a change and just recently checked and it was still on the full mark but after the smoke its now down a bit.
The black was more like a leaking exhaust than oil actualy.
The smoke was certainly more than leaking exhaust fumes i recon.
?????????
Thanks for your idea.

Not sure that exhaust gasses give a 'rubbery, clutchy' type of smell GN, something smells a bit fishy there!!!!
Could it have been something that has dropped down in the engine bay previously and graually made it's way down touching the exhaust?
Maybe a grommet or perhaps one of the rubber blocks that are used as separators on the A/C pipes.

12HT is a great engine,
Think about the smell. Clutch smell, you would have noticed it slipping, even slightly.
Oil smell. You did not notice any of that.
Rubber smell. Only place that comes from is drive belts. Maybe an alternator with bearing problems, or a water/power steer pump problem causing it, or a mud flap caught on a wheel, which makes a bit of a racket.
Hope this helps
