got
mine from the states....much cheaper, but I only got 30 meters I think. Mainly got it cos of the weight saving and the safety factor. Still carry an extension strap too.

The rope doesnt really fray it gets "fluffy" - NO Roachie not the Fluffy you let out of the bag! I have seen some VERY fluffy ropes pull comp cars almost vertical so dont believe everything you hear mate.

Here's a lead - an email should enable you to source a longer piece at a less than stupid price.

Apart from cost and having to chuck it if damaged, keep in mind that most low-mount
winches (ie: the
winches most of us use) overheat the winch drum during braking and destroy plasma rope. Plasma rope is usually only used with high-mount
winches where the braking mechanism is distant from the winch drum.
There are exceptions, but make sure you have one of the exceptions b4 coughing up for plasma rope.
Cheers

John, I'm probably wrong (as usual), but I believe the overheating drum due to braking effect, is only an issue if/when you are paying-out the cable under load (eg: lowering yourself down a
hill etc).
In my opinion, most winching operations are done with the winch reeling-in the load and the brake drum should not get too hot. I will gladly stand corrected.

Hi Roachie
You are quite correct, but it would be a hell of a time for an unexpected winch rope failure! I quess it's a matter of weighing up the advantages of reduced weight and safer manual handling against the disadvantages of cost and heat intolerance. For many people, I'd think the cost for a rarely used item would rule it out, but there's all kinds of people in the 4WD scene LOL.
Cheers
John

Hi,
Why not use both? 20m of wire and 30m of plasma rope.

Um at a guess I would say there is probably no safe way of joining the two.

Get in touch with Roger Smith of Dynamica rope fame and get him to quote you. I got
mine there and I reckon its THE best safety applicance I have on the 4b.

Only run 18m of plasma here - winch needs a rest after that away , and back it up with several extension straps , from 5m in length
Fantasic stuff that has many a 4wder a heart attack I'm sure.
Also have velcro nylon sheath about 1 m long that can go over partof rope if it has to go over rocks etc.
The flexiblity of this stuff is that I have thrown it under the patrol and out beteen the back wheels and pulled car backwards as rope slips axles etc.
Wouldn't try that with a steel rope.

There are newer types of plasma that are far more heat resistant than the original sort. You can splice it if it gets cut or frays. Also you need to change to a hawse fairlead as the rollers can pinch and cut the plasma.
