Hi all, after some first hand info please,
the kids and I are flying to Perth on Anzac day to spend 2 weeks with Al [who's working over there], I want to get an idea from WA people of things to do with kids in Perth during the week, ie things to see, probably be just the kids and I as Al will be at work I know about AQWA, the Mint, the zoo and Kings park, anything else? Is there a kids science museum similar to Scienceworks in Melbourne? We will be staying in the Ascot area and probably will use public transport to get around. Last time I spent a great deal of time in Perth I was 25 and not really interested in kids stuff. Hopefully we'll head down south for one weekend and perhaps go out to York and beyond as well on the other weekend.

thanks in advance

Lyn

Lyn, have a look at westernaustralia.com, the website for Tourism WA. Then if you then search Perth you will see a list of attractions. We have a nice zoo ,museum and art gallery close to the city centre (if that is the kids' thing)

Agree with the things listed previously.

Also you can try whiteman park- which is free to use the facilities. It will cost you to use the museums and major attractions. Lots of park land, old machinery, BBQ's etc.. Located in the swan valley, has heaps for kids to do. It is linked to the caversham wildlife park. They have a great birds of prey exhibit. Also have a steam train, tram, bush walks, pool (free to use) and heaps of other things that elude me at this moment. If you googled whiteman park, im sure you will find plenty of information.

Please make sure you have your shots before you come, quarantine matters LOL

Al & Mrs Al

Would have to agree with Mike - Whiteman Park is a good (free) day for the kids. Have to pay for the train / Tram, and wildlife park, but worth it, as it will keep the kids happy, and probably wear them out. Also interesting from an Adult point of view as well.

Already mentioned, Scitech and the Zoo (much better now than 25 years ago - although the polar bear is no more), and Rotto may be worth a day trip?

Took my 6 year old to the Museum last weekend, and ended up spending about 4 hours wandering around. Quite interesting, plus stuff for the kids to do in the activity room down stairs.

Enjoy the trip, and the break.

DON'T LISTEN TO MIKE W!!
if you do a search i have documented a way to build a simple electric fence child protector involving a solar panel, 4 metal stakes, some chicken wire, a small battery and a set of jump leads.
this could be set up easily in the casino gardens and would keep the kids in while detering the peodophiles.
remember, don't leave kids inside a car, it's dangerous!!!!!

Howie,

I like your idea, however it would be pertinent to ensure that the kids slip, slop and slap. Skin cancer is a real danger these days

Hi there Howie and Mike

I can get my hands on a portable electric fence, so perhaps I should pack it...I thought leaving kids in cars at casinos was a Melbourne thing...this will make me feel right at home....

I'll make sure the kids slip, slop, slap, even at night, I know how the sun is much fiercer than over here in the east. :))

cheers

Go down to Fremantle for a day and check out the old Maritime Museum - it's free and absolutely fantastic. It will enlighten you on who really discovered this country.

There is also the Freo markets, fish and chips for lunch from Ciccerellos (opposite the Old Maritime Museum), the Old Fremantle Goal etc - plenty to do in a day.

Spend a day or two on one of our beaches.

Catch the bus to Mandurah or Rockingham to spend the day at even better beaches :-))

Take one of the many Swan river cruises up to the wineries for a day or down to Freo.

There is lots to do.

You will probably won't want to go home ;-)

Hi Lyn,

All good suggestions so far. If you like the idea of the fremantle jail tour, add in the underground tunnels waterways tour as well - but may be a bit scary for the kids.

Have fun while in WA.

The tunnel tour would be a bit scary for me, there's canoes involved, and I'm not too keen on those... and I think there's an age limit..my kids are 5 & 7 not sure they'd be able to go down there.

Hi Mrs Al, no body has mentioned it but you can see the Dockers play footy live.
Rotto Is good.
If you have a 4WD (you may have a hire car) there are a few good tracks to do close by.
Maybe we West Ozzies could have a get together, what do you think???

Also the Dawn service at Kings Park ANZAC day.

Would be nice to catch up with a few West Ozzies while over there...

unfortunately I will miss the dawn service at Kings Park as I fly in at about 12.15pm, though I might mention it to Al as he is over there from the 10th of April, (coming home for Easter), might head over to Rotto, twas good when I went there many years ago..

cheers

Lyn

PS....Freo play would be a damn sight more exciting than that other afl team you have over there!

Hi Lyn,
I just went on a whole school excursion with my son to Scitech a couple of weeks ago and all the kids from Year 1 - Year 7 had a ball. They change it regularly but at the moment it is set up about "movie special effects" which I believe will be going on until May. My son is 8 now and we have been going there every 6 months for the last couple of years now so I think it caters for all ages. Worth it for a day out anyway. And I also agree with the Rottnest idea. Kids just love riding their bikes around there for the day. And just going on the ferry across is fun for them too.
Anyway, hope you have a great time while you are in WA.
Enjoy

Scitech sounds the "go" my kids love Scienceworks here in Melbourne, so I think that we will definitely head there.

They are looking forward to being in Perth as they've heard me go on about how much I love WA for a while now...

Hi Lyn,
A few things to do around Perth, we have a lot of parks, reserves and fabulous beaches... dont know how old your kids are but mine are 11, 7, 4 & 6mths. I would suggest to hire a car as venues in Perth are spread out... and Perth is still improving its public transport. In Perth and Fremantle (tourist hot spots) the public transport is efficient... else where... not so. Need to be organised and plan your trip with Transperth website.
We have Scitech, interactive science museum in West Perth coupled with IMAX theartre, just off the West Perth train station. Other musuems: In the city off the Perth Train Station is the Cultural Centre with state library, art gallery and museum (a real hit with the school age kids). Maritime Museum (see the winged keel that won the America's Cup) in Fremantle (can get there via Fremantle CAT bus from train station) also there is an Energy Museum in Fremantle too. Lots of things to do in Freo, as we call it. It has a market on Thurs-Sun (but dont compare it to your Victoria Markets). Fish and Chips on the jetty and a Macca's with million dollar view.
AQWA is difficult to get to by public transport unless its on the weekends they have a bus from the Greenwood train station that goes to Hillary's Boat Harbour (where AQWA lives) bring your bathers for a swim either at the beach or water slides.
Penguin Island in Rockingham (best by car) catch a ferry to the island, picnic, swim, visit the penguins possible see seals too.
Adventure World in Bibra lake is our only "theme park" with various water slides and dry rides but pricey entrance fee. There are buses but its a long bus ride. There is also a water ski park down that way too.
Another "cheap" fun thing to do is to hire a bike or trike and cycle around the Swan River. It takes about 45 minutes at cruising pace to complete the circuit. There are at least 2- 3 playgrounds along the way and several cafes for refreshments!
In Ascot you will be close to Canning River which in itself has several parks, few good fishing spots (Tranby House, Garvey Park) also near Ascot is the Belmont Shopping centre, next to it is Faulkner Park (Volcanoe Park as my kids call it) it has a flying fox and climbing frames sutiable for 4-10yrolds. Next to that is a skate park where the local kids (mostly boys) hangout. Also near the shopping centre is Tomato Lake where it is home to a few species of native birds incl the Black Swan, nice to walk, ride, skate around. Feed the swans at your own peril.
If you do head south, Mandurah (1hr) is worth a visit if you live seeing million dollar homes on the canals you can hire a boat and chug around the canals. Busselton Jetty (3-4hrs) over 1km of jetty, great fishing (we'll be there in Easter), Light house at Cape Naturaliste (45min from Busselton) and the numerous caves with stalagmites and tites etc... and for the adults the wineries!
Head way north (like 8hrs) to Monkey Mia to view dolphins up close.
Just a few things to do!
Regards
Denise

Hi Denise

We will have a car as I will have use of Al's hire car when he doesn't need it, I want to take the kids down to Busselton as I have fished off that Jetty and was telling them about it today. We will go to Freo, as I love the place, was there in Feb of this year for our anniversary, will go to the Market, as I can buy Eccles cakes there...YUMMO...my godmother lives in Shelley and she will be meeting up with us and will no doubt be offering suggestions. Scitech is defnitely a goer, I think too, there is a zoo called Cavensham zoo, up in the Swan Valley area that we may check out.

Have checked out the tourism site, and there's stacks of ideas there.

cheers

Lyn
