Big Fella,

I would think it would be like UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM, and it would go as long as a piece of string.

This would have to be one of those questions that have no answer because it don't have enough information.

Hi Bigfella

Looking at those tyres also as one of few available in 255/85/16

I expect them to be noisy than previous MTR's but no noiser than my Cooper st

I prefer a thinner taller tyre on my Patrol BigFella

The MTR's were quite good but only in those conditions that suit open tyres, but overall no better than BFG/AT I have as a third set.

I had some 265/75's MTR at price to good to refuse - but after 5000km they were cut up a bit and only had option to go to 285 if I wanted 33's

Cooper st also had 255/85/16 which is both taller (33 1/2) and narrower so I went for these, but I don't like cooper st very much.
255 is a rare size and have got a quote of $250 each for bighorn but I have yet to physically see one.

When they squeeze the same pattern into a narrow size like 255 the tyre gaps are smaller and its likely the gaps between blocks are no larger than 285 cooper st gaps.

I.E. Only just a muddy and hence not quite so noisy.

Does it matter? That's what the stereo is for when on the BORING bitumen!

Cheers

My understanding of road noise is that the more aggressive the tyre, the more noise.
In the equation off-road ability and on-road noise, which is the more important consideration?.

Excellent point- For those who can afford - perhaps a set of aggressive tyres/rims for those weekend trips - and a set for general comute to and from work.

Look on ebay - there are always complete sets there from people that just want to upgrade without wanthing to change back during the week

Hi bigfella,

I have just put a set of Maxxis Trepador on my project Blizzard today and I can tell you the tyre noise is more than the rattly old 2.2 diesel and I thought that was loud. I know these are a little more aggressive than the bighorn but not much in reality, so probably similar noise levels.

I can let you know how they perform next week as we are off to Landcruiser Mtn Park this weekend to really take the greeness off them. Keep an eye out for the trip report next week to see what we got up to.

As a side note, mine are only 30x9.5 15's and the block width is still pretty good for a small tyre, which suprised me. I have seen the 31x10.5 in the Bighorn and they also have a good block width.

Regards, Trevor.

Cheers Trevor.

Ordered a set for Easter , so will see how they go.

They certainly look noisy , its important I find to really have a good look at most things before you buy for little characteristics that may not be seen otherwise.

In tyres , the same size can have quite different tread widths and height.

The size I think right for patrols 255/85/16 was hard to find - and the distributor unknown (tyremax or something in Thomastown vic).

After many phone calls I got someone to order one in for me to look at no obligation.

The Bighorn had weaker sidewalls than say new Cooper stt - and for me this is a positive.

It also had sipes which BFG muds don't.

The Pattern went well round the tyres outside and has for example a lot more meat on it than Cooper ST

Ordered at $240 each - and should have enough change for a good set of earmuffs.

Its raining here and mud is forming - bring on easter !

First run on the highway , and got pleasant surprise the tyres are just not that noisy.

Less harsh than my coppers and more compliant with softer rubber.

Can hear tyres over engine - but you would hardly hear them in say 4.2 Nissan diesel.

Early days but these Big horn MT tyres could be just I've been looking for.

Whole wheel tyre assembly weighed in at just 37.8kg
