Hi all recieved this today, how very true.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE KIDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE

1930s,1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's !!
First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a tin, and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.
We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking .
As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.
Riding in the back of a van - loose - was always great fun.
We drank water from the garden hosepipe and NOT from a bottle.
We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.
We ate cakes, white bread and real butter and drank pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......
WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.
We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem .
We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no text messaging, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!
We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents .
We played with worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.
Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not poke out any eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!
Local teams had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!
This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned
HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!
And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.
and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.
Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!
PS -The BIG type is because your eyes are shot at your age

you forgot this.

A smack on the arse never hurt me, it doesn't hurt my young fella either.

Cheers Steve.

I am in one of those generations that the above generalises about and they are mostly too true.
Unfortunately we lay a lot of blame on the y generation for their behaviour issues but we should remember that it is us who have raised them to be like the way they are because we didn't like the way and the restrictions that our parents placed on us.
I acknowledge that a lot of the above is generalisations and so are my comments so take it for what it's worth. (about 2 cents and even they are obsolete)

I agree Mr Lexic

BUT...I do to a degree blame that generation for the trouble with youth of today however I also blame the educators, the pollies etc

When they legislate that you cant smack your kids because its assault is crap. The educators for perpetuating the myth that parents are not allowed to smack your child is just rubbish.

When I was kid parents would give a smack..didnt do me any harm. Local cops give you clip behind the ear...I grew up to respect the law. If a cop smacks a kid now..sheesh he loses his job and gos inside for assault.
I remember my son came home from school with a sticker..he said it was the child abuse hotline number and if I ever hit him he could call it. I said son go get the phone and make the call because no one will tell me how to raise my kids. Im proud to say that 1 son graduated Uni last year and the other makes obscene money up north. Both enjoy a drink, 1 smokes(littlechit) and neither do drugs. As you said mr Lexic in general most of us do ok....but then others let the system get the better of them.

Just my thoughts

Good one, makes you think.

I would agree. Like in school when you got the strap. Kids these days do what they want in class and the teachers can do nothing.
I got my far share and the odd clip under the ear from my parents.

Makes you respect authority. A lot of kids these day don't have that, as a lot understand the law and know what they can get away with.
I know our local copper when I was growing up would give a kid what for, they wouldn't want to go there again.

I agree totally...can you please add those who were born early 80's !!!!

Laws have changed how we can raise our children....i remember being smacked by mum in th emiddle of coles one day...no one blinked an eye.....but if i did it to my daughters these days i would be dragged down to the local cop shop....

i like scotlands rule - smack but dont leave a mark!!

blame our ma's and pa's, blame the pollies, blame the teachers...i dont care, we are all to blame in some sort of way because we are not perfect..

maybe too we are more aware of what others are like around us....maybe media has a big part to play....allowing us to know more about the murderers, abusers etc....

we have friends on the end of the phone line, the other side of the computers...

just me adding my 2 bob....

Bit ironic posting this to a forum from which many members spend much of their time pontificating about adherence to rules and regulations and frequently lecturing others in regard to imagined safety issues.

Some interesting observations there.

You forgot to add that in the 1930's old people thought that electric light was the work of the devil and refused to have it their house.

Also, did you know that the infant death rate in the 30's was around 45 per 1000 and it's now around 5 per 1000 - could it be because their 1930's mothers drank, smoked and ate blue cheese.

Life expectancy was almost half of what it is now, because people didn't wear seatbelts, helmets, shared drinks from one bottle and licked lead paint.

But one can always make remarks, knowing that the people who can contradict these statements, are no longer around to dispute such claims.

:)

I'll agree to a certain extent, kids don't eat enough dirt today, and when our kids are playing up pretty bad they get a smack. I will disagree about the kids rolling around in the back of the van thing. I grew up doing that, but now that I have kids we have spent quite a bit of cash on the best car seats and restraints you can buy.

Its horifying the amount of 'local' toddlers you see up here travelling on the knee in the front seat, sometimes the driver's. We here all to aften that a relatively minor accident has injured the adults and killed a child up here.

Cheers Andrew

Makes me sick to think you cant smack you're kid if he is misbehaving in public how else is it going to learn I'm not saying belt the hell out of them but I am yet to see a good smack on the ass cause a kid any long term problems. I got jug cords, belts, flogging sticks, wooden spoons, and I got smacked till it hurt and I also remeber going to a mates place and doing something wrong I would get belted by there parents and you know what I never did it again. I mean I never got hit that hard but After a few good belts I remeber that was all I needed my father could just threaten me and that would be that I would behave.
