Hi everyone,
I am in the throws of fitting a GU 4.5 EFI into the Mav. I am replacing the 4.2 petrol/gas which you all know is a little slow with the van on the back and it's only a Jayco Eagle outback. I had the opportunity to pick up the 4.5 at the right price so I decided it would be a good opportunity to obtain a few more HP and 260K less miles. Here are a few of the problems I had to deal with. Firstly I must explain that my neighbour is a mechanic and 4WD nut and he has helped me no end. He is also a whip with the injection and computer side of things.
The computer I am running is a standard Holden V8 computer and modified Holden loom out of a VS V8. The distributer is a GQ modified to accept a Ford EA crank angle sensor which can be read buy the Holden computer. The reason for the Holden computer is because it is cheap to buy and the the loom is easily modified. A few connections need to be extended and a few not needed.
The motor fits straight in. the engine mounts being either GQ or GU fit. The flywheel and gearbox bolt straight up as does the exhaust. A GQ fuel injected accelerator cable is required, half the price of the GU from nissan. The major hurdle we have discovered is that the GQ dizzy is different to the GU. The GU does not have the locating support on the shaft like the GQ and the gear drive is different. I had to buy a GU dizzy just to get the gear and put it onto the GQ and them remove the remainder of the shaft after the gear. This was done without any drama only to discover another problem. When I put it into the engine the lock nut does not line up. The GU has a wider flange than the GQ and I had to file out the slot to make it fit. It's a little thin but will work OK.
As I was running duel fuel, the EFI pump has to be modified to fit the smaller petrol tank. It needs to be shortened about 4-5 inches to fit. No real problems, just shorten the bracket holding the pump and re weld it. The flex fuel lines need to be replaced with EFI line and reduced from 10mm to 8mm. I haven't got an air cleaner as yet but because of the cost of the nissan ones I think I will use a Commodore one unless someone can recommend a something better.
I mounted the computer in the Melways slot area of the glove box. Have lost a little bit of the room but nothing to worry about. A hole need to be cut above the passenger left foot for the loom to pass through. Hoping to get it going tonight and then will need several hours on the dyno at Peninsula Performance and 4WD accessories in Mornington who have a brand new 4WD dyno for the Vic readers. My neighbour mechanic runs the dyno so if you need any 4WD performance tuning or modifications , you can contact Joel on 5975 2642.
Is it worth it? I hope so. The truck is in excellent condition so I figured it was worth spending the money on.
If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask and I will try to answer if I can. Cheers, Glenn

Thought about it many times. This was a lot easier despite the couple of hiccups. Rego was another reason.

Interesting, I own a 95efi dual/fuel. Would it be a straight forward exercise in my case as it is already EFI? would I need the GU puter or would the GQ stuff run it. What about immobiliser, is that in the puter. Any help from your neighbour would be great.
Cheers

The computers are totally different and expensive which is why we used to Holden stuff. Got it running the other night. Just a few little glitches to sort out then onto the dyno. Cheers, Glenn

yea, there are several of these done before.. The comp blokes have these worked on by JPC pumping out over 240rwkw.. that would rock.

Auto Gas Connections in Carrum Downs also has a 4wd Dyno... You can also visit the brothel 2 doors down while you wait :)
