Hi Pelesino,
I currently have a 1991 GQ 3.0 lt Petrol carby Patrol with 370,000k.
I have previously had that same motor in Holdens, though fuel injected, that felt very powerful. Weight is the biggest enemy of the RB30.
I always have a winge to myself about the lack of power and joke about it being slow.
However, I am almost always first away from the lights (a habit from bike riding) and around town it is as quick as most cars in normal use.
On the highway it is fast enough but slows down on hills. Almost unbearably.
I have often thought about changing the motor out with something more powerful, but being a scrooge, I don't want to pay more rego or fuel than I have to.
I get about 15l/100k from my round town driving and around 12.5 on the highway.
I often tow trailers with only small affect on economy. Big affect on performance though. (hills anyway).
I get the occasional fuel stutter when cold (5 times now) but this is a minor inconvenience and not enough to actually go looking for and fixing the problem.
Would I go for a bigger engine?????
I couldn't justify the expense of running a 4.2l petrol or a V8 chev but I would be interested in a diesel but not enough to
fork out the dollars for a change over.
I am happy with the little 3.0 and it goes anywhere and does everything I have asked of it. For the money they just can't be beat. If I could get a turbo or Fuel injection swap over I might just do it but otherwise I 'll stay with what i have.
If they are the same price, go the diesel. If there is $3k more for the yota, go the nissan. (all other things being equal.)
Great thing about the petrol is, they are cheap to repair as engine and gearbox are thick on the ground. And they go forever.
Mine runs sweet as. Even better than my '02 Frontera for smoothness and running costs.
Cheers Cam
